Dutch's Sandwich Shop, the Montclair breakfast sandwich hit known for its Taylor ham and gochujang beefsteak creations, is opening its fourth location at 270 Grand Street in Downtown Jersey City. The new outpost will mark the brand's second Hudson County shop, following its Hoboken debut earlier this year, and will take over the storefront once occupied by Cafe Dolma.

According to Jersey Digs, Dutch's is owned by Amir Kamal, who grew up in New York City and named the shop after his bulldog. The Jersey City location is expected to open sometime next year, though the company has not announced a specific opening date. Grand Street's new tenant will arrive in a space that most recently served as a Turkish and Mediterranean breakfast cafe run by a former Wall Street technology worker, which closed in the spring, according to reporting from Hoboken Girl.

Dutch's Express Comes to Grand Street

The Jersey City shop will be called Dutch's Express and will feature menu items created exclusively for the location, according to Hoboken Girl.

That original shop opened on Church Street in Montclair in 2023, according to a 2023 feature from Best of NJ. New Jersey sandwich reviewer Kevin Knissel, who posts as @teamtaylornj, gave the shop's signature Taylor ham, egg, and cheese a 9.4 out of 10. New Jersey Digest also reported waiting lines at the Montclair location.

From Hospital Work to a Growing Sandwich Brand

Kamal's path to running a sandwich empire wasn't a straight line. He previously worked in hospitals and sold kitchen equipment, according to New Jersey Digest.

The brand's growth since 2023 has been rapid. Dutch's opened its first Hudson County location in February at 86 Garden Street in Hoboken, taking over a space previously home to GreekTown, per Hoboken Girl's reporting. Then in September, the company announced a Bergen County expansion at 242 Market Street in Elmwood Park, occupying the former home of smash burger spot Meat Us Here, as Boozy Burbs reported. With the Jersey City announcement, the brand's four locations are in Montclair, Hoboken, Elmwood Park, and Jersey City.

Pop Culture Branding Meets New York Deli Roots

Part of what sets Dutch's apart from a typical neighborhood deli is its branding. The shops feature movie character artwork on the walls, and sandwiches are named after pop culture figures, songs, and films, blending Kamal's personal interests in music and movies with New York deli culture, according to Hoboken Girl. The menu includes the Dutch Daddy, loaded with hot pastrami, egg, and muenster cheese, and the Highlander, built around gochujang beefsteak, egg, shredded mozzarella, kimchi, and spicy mayo.

Other standouts include the Cheese Wizz Khalifa, piled with house roast beef, Cheez Whiz, and crispy onions, and the Getting Figgy With It, which pairs prosciutto, burrata, arugula, and fig jam. The shop also serves a chicken Caesar cheesesteak on a semolina hero, the vodka sauce-topped Drunken Chicken, wraps, cold sandwiches, and sides like fried chicken wings, seasoned bacon ranch fries, falafel, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings. Dutch's posts menu updates and announcements on its Instagram account, @dutchssandwichshop.
