East Aurora football will host a playoff game at home for the first time in 46 years Friday at 7 p.m., welcoming Oak Park-River Forest to town in a Class 8A opening-round matchup that carries weight far beyond the scoreboard. At the center of it all, literally, is senior Victor Torres, a 5-foot-10, 230-pound anchor of the Tomcats' offensive line who has spent his final season playing for a teammate who can no longer suit up alongside him.

A Program Finally Breaking Through

East Aurora qualified for the playoffs after finishing the regular season 5-4, according to the Aurora Beacon-News. The Tomcats finished 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Upstate Eight Conference West Division, as reported by oakpark.com. That record was enough to land East Aurora the No. 32 seed in the Class 8A bracket, per the Chicago Tribune, setting up Friday's opening-round date against Oak Park-River Forest, the No. 33 seed.

This marks East Aurora's fifth playoff appearance in program history, according to the same oakpark.com report. The breakthrough traces back to 2023, when the Tomcats ended a 41-year postseason drought by finishing the regular season 6-3, clinching that berth with a 54-20 Upstate Eight Conference win over Fenton, the Beacon-News reported at the time. It was the program's first trip to the playoffs since 1982, ending back-to-back 4-5 seasons that preceded the breakthrough.

Expanded Bracket, New Opportunity

East Aurora will have a home playoff game because of new playoff formatting, according to coach Nick Kukuc, though he said the Tomcats would have made the playoff cut regardless of the situation. The IHSA expanded the field and added another round for 2026, the Beacon-News noted, pushing Class 8A and 7A to 48-team brackets in which the top 16 seeds earn byes. The expansion has reshaped the postseason landscape statewide; 18 teams with 2-7 records qualified for this year's playoffs across the state, per the same Beacon-News report. Should East Aurora beat Oak Park-River Forest, the winner would travel to face top-seeded Lincoln-Way East, which finished its regular season 9-0, according to the Chicago Tribune's bracket breakdown.

Oak Park-River Forest arrives at East Aurora with its own long-awaited return. The Huskies clinched their first state playoff berth since 2018, oakpark.com reported, finishing the regular season 4-5.

A Teammate's Diagnosis Reshapes a Senior Season

Victor Torres and Cristian Agustin came up together on East Aurora's offensive line, starting at left guard and right guard, respectively, last year. The two expected one of them to slide over to center as seniors. Instead, Agustin was diagnosed with leukemia, according to the Beacon-News, a diagnosis that reordered everything about how Torres approached his final season.

Torres moved from guard to center, where he now anchors East Aurora's offensive line. He began his motivation at the end of his junior season, and according to assistant coach Matt Orbell, Torres worked out in the Tomcats' weight room every day during the offseason. Orbell also said Torres checks in on Agustin when his friend is not at school.

Torres considers Agustin one of East Aurora's captains, and he said Agustin attends games when he can. East Aurora honored Agustin as a captain at its pediatric cancer awareness game on Sept. 4, when he attended the Tomcats' home contest against Elmwood Park. Agustin receives services from the program's cancer support system, Kukuc said.

'He Inspires Me to Keep Going'

Torres has been direct about what losing a teammate to illness, rather than graduation or injury, has meant to him. He said Agustin inspires him to keep going, and he said he wished Agustin could still play alongside the team. Senior quarterback Joseph Becker said the team was emotional about Agustin's diagnosis, a reaction that rippled through a senior class that was freshmen when East Aurora made its 2023 playoff breakthrough.

Torres said he was happy with how the season had gone, even as he acknowledged that the end would be difficult simply because it is his senior year. East Aurora dressed 28 players for the season opener and had 22 for the regular-season finale, a thinning roster that makes Friday's home playoff game, and the run that got the Tomcats there, feel even more hard-earned.
