A heated argument over street parking near Huston-Tillotson University has turned into a full-blown neighborhood flashpoint, after a video of the confrontation surpassed one million views online and drew crowds to the doorstep of the couple involved. The gatherings unfolded over the weekend of October 10 outside an East Austin home, with students and community members playing music, chanting and waving signs.
The video was posted last week by a Huston-Tillotson student named Bri, according to FOX 7 Austin, and shows her confronting a couple over a dispute about parking on East 9th Street. The station reports the clip has since gained over one million views on Instagram. Per Atlanta Black Star, the student is senior Bri Nunn, who posted the Instagram Reel on October 5 after approaching the couple outside their home to discuss the parking issue — a conversation the outlet says quickly went sideways.
What Was Said In The Confrontation
During the exchange, the woman in the video can be heard saying, “This is our neighborhood! OK. This is our neighborhood,” and telling Nunn to leave the property even though Nunn was standing on a public street, the same outlet reports. The woman also said, “We paid 1.5 million dollars for our house,” and raised the university’s graduation rate during the argument. Nunn said the woman’s comments about gentrifying the neighborhood and the graduation rate were racist and disgusting, telling Atlanta Black Star that the woman degraded the school.
The graduation-rate figure itself became a point of dispute. The Root reported the woman said, “Y’all’s graduation rate is 25 percent!” during the confrontation, but noted that College Board data puts Huston-Tillotson’s actual rate at 33 percent.
Allegations Of Notes And Blocked Cars
Beyond the viral clip, students have accused the unidentified woman of leaving rude notes on legally parked cars and of blocking a professor’s car in with trash cans, according to Atlanta Black Star. An Instagram post from the account @briii.likethecheese made similar claims, stating the couple had been “harassing the Black students and professors at Huston-Tillotson university” after buying a home across the street from the campus where legal street parking exists, and alleging they had been “writing notes and putting it on their cars” and had blocked “a Black professor’s car IN with their trash can and recycling bin.”
Huston-Tillotson University is a private institution with around 1,000 students located in East Austin’s Chicon neighborhood, per Atlanta Black Star. The City of Austin told FOX 7 Austin that parking is allowed on the relevant blocks of East 9th Street, except in restricted areas such as corner clearances, intersections and driveways.
Crowds Gather, Police Called
The backlash to the video played out in person over the weekend, with crowds gathering outside the home to play music, chant and wave signs, the station reported. Neighbors said police were called to the area during the protest, but the interactions remained peaceful, according to the same report. FOX 7 Austin said it attempted to reach the woman shown in the video but received no response.
The episode has also drawn commentary framing it within wider debates over gentrification and race near historically Black colleges, according to The Root, which described the video as illustrating entitlement creeping into historically Black spaces. A local newsletter, Austin Dispatch, characterized the public response as a rejection of the couple’s behavior, writing that the reaction showed “the power of the collective,” and noted that people made donations to Huston-Tillotson in the homeowner’s name as the video circulated among outlets beyond Austin.
