More than 50 evidence markers now dot a stretch of Newick Drive on Columbus's east side after police responded to reports of gunfire between Cordova Road and Mill Branch Road Monday night. No injuries had been reported as investigators worked the scene, and the case remained open as of the latest update.
According to CNAW 2 with Colin Scroggins, the Columbus Police Department is investigating a shots-fired incident on the east side of the city. The outlet reported receiving word of gunfire in the area of Newick Drive, and said investigators placed more than 50 evidence markers throughout the scene as they worked to document and collect evidence.
Crime Scene Unit Called In to Process the Area
The Columbus Police Department's Crime Scene Investigations Division conducted the on-the-ground work, per the same CNAW 2 report. The density of markers scattered across the scene suggests investigators were tracking a wide spray of evidence, though the report did not detail what each marker represented. As of the report, the investigation remained ongoing, and no injuries had been reported.
Not the First Time Gunfire Has Hit This Stretch
This is not the first time this particular corridor of east Columbus has drawn police attention. In April, Columbus police responded to a shooting in the 6100 block of Newick Drive near Cordova Road and Celeste Drive, after which one person was hospitalized and reported in stable condition, according to WTVM. And in July 2025, the department launched an investigation after two overnight shootings struck homes along Newick Drive and Mill Branch Road, with the affected houses located about a block apart and no serious injuries reported, as WRBL reported at the time.
Shootings Make Up Half of Violent Crime Citywide
The repeated gunfire in this part of town fits into a broader pattern tracked across Columbus. SpotCrime's analytics page recorded 280 shootings over a three-month span, an average of roughly 93 per month, with July seeing the most at 131, followed by September with 80 and August with 69. The site also found that shootings made up about 51 percent of all violent crime recorded in the city during that period, though SpotCrime itself cautions that its figures are not official FBI statistics.
For now, the scene on Newick Drive remains an active investigation. No arrests, suspects, or further details have been released beyond the evidence collection effort described by CNAW 2, and police have not issued an incident number or additional timeline for the case.
