Eight defendants are facing charges in connection with a narcotics conspiracy centered in Newburgh, following an investigation led by a federal task force working alongside state and local police. Federal officials say the eight allegedly built a business out of selling drugs in what one top FBI official called a shameless open-air market in the city.
The charges were announced by FBI New York
, which credited the investigation to its Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force. That unit worked with the New York State Police, the City of Newburgh Police Department, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York to build the case against the eight defendants, according to the bureau's announcement.
“The FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force works every day alongside our state and local partners to combat violent crime, and part of that means ridding the streets of illicit narcotics,” said FBI New York Field Office ADIC James C. Barnacle Jr. “As alleged in the indictment, these eight individuals made it their business to sell drugs in a shameless open-air market.”
What the Indictment Alleges
The conspiracy was allegedly carried out primarily through hand-to-hand narcotics transactions in Newburgh, with law enforcement conducting more than sixty controlled purchases of crack cocaine involving each member of the conspiracy named in the indictment.
Barnacle framed the arrests as part of a broader mission for the bureau's task force. “This FBI will stop at nothing to dismantle these drug networks and make our communities safer as a result,” he said in the same statement.
A Pattern of Newburgh Narcotics Enforcement
This is not the first time federal and local authorities have targeted alleged drug activity in the small Hudson Valley city. A separate enforcement action previously announced by Orange County, New York described undercover investigators purchasing crack cocaine and heroin from individuals in and around Newburgh and the Town of Wallkill, resulting in nine arrests, though that matter is a distinct case from the one announced this week.
Newburgh has also seen task force action tied to gang activity. The City of Newburgh Police Department announced in March 2023 that a joint operation involving the Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force and New York State Police had taken twenty-eight violent gang members off the street since the prior November. Months later, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced the final sentencing in a long-running FBI investigation spanning Newburgh and Poughkeepsie that targeted gang members and narcotics distributors, according to a Justice Department release search result.
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have pursued similar crack cocaine conspiracy cases in the area before. A 2016 case charged nine defendants accused of conspiring to sell crack cocaine in and around Newburgh between October 2015 and May 2016, and in November 2023 federal authorities announced charges against twenty-eight gang members and associates from Newburgh and Poughkeepsie on racketeering, narcotics, and firearms offenses. None of those earlier cases have been shown to be connected to the eight defendants charged this week.
No further details about the identities of the eight defendants, the specific charges they face, or their custody status have been released. It also remains unclear whether the defendants have entered pleas or retained attorneys, and no court dates or case outcomes have been announced.
