A 46-year-old man died Thursday after being struck by a train near Elk Grove Florin Road and Bond Road, police said, prompting a lengthy road closure as investigators worked the scene. The train came to a stop after the crash but did not block the roadway, according to authorities.

Bond Road was shut down in both directions just east of Elk Grove Florin Road while Elk Grove police investigated, and the closure was expected to remain in place for at least a couple more hours, according to CBS Sacramento. The identity of the victim had not been released as police continued their work at the scene.

The crash happened along a stretch of track where the City of Elk Grove maintains designated Quiet Zones, including at crossings near Bond Road, Elk Grove-Florin Road, Calvine Road and Elk Grove Boulevard, according to the City of Elk Grove.

Earlier Fatal Train Crashes

Thursday's fatality is not an isolated event in the area. Six weeks and three days earlier, on August 31, a train struck and killed an adult male pedestrian near Calvine Road and Ardith Drive, on the border of South Sacramento and Elk Grove — a crash that shut down Calvine Road for hours while Union Pacific and local authorities investigated, as Hoodline previously reported.

In November 2022, two pedestrians were killed when a train struck them at a crossing on Elk Grove Boulevard near Railroad Street, at about 1 a.m. near Old Town Elk Grove, according to KCRA 3.

California Leads the Nation in Rail Trespass Deaths

Thursday's crash also lands amid a troubling statewide trend. Federal Railroad Administration data compiled by Operation Lifesaver shows California led all U.S. states in rail trespass casualties in 2025, recording 233 total casualties including 152 fatalities and 81 injuries — far ahead of Texas, which ranked second nationally with 135 total trespass casualties.

Researchers at UC San Diego's Transportation Research and Education for Driving Safety center received a $3.9 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration in 2025 to study rail trespassing patterns in California and develop prevention toolkits for transit and freight rail lines, according to the Qualcomm Institute. Researchers there noted that accessible track corridors and high population density contribute to the state's elevated fatality rates.

Elk Grove's Broader Traffic Safety Push

The rail corridor sits close to an intersection already under heightened scrutiny. The vehicle intersection of Elk Grove Florin Road and Bond Road, adjacent to the railroad crossing, is monitored by automated red-light enforcement cameras that the city uses to track traffic violations along high-density arterials, Hoodline has previously reported.

That enforcement expansion came after total traffic collisions in Elk Grove rose steadily over three consecutive years, climbing from 984 in 2023 to 1,125 in 2024 and 1,248 in 2025, with total local traffic fatalities reaching nine in 2025, five of which involved pedestrians. City officials approved $2.3 million in traffic safety expansions in response to those rising numbers, according to the same report.

As of Thursday evening, Elk Grove police had not released the identity of the man killed near Bond Road, and the circumstances that led him onto the tracks remained under investigation.
