A person was killed in a crash along Elk Road in Elk Township before 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the Elk Township Police Department. Fire crews blocked off the rural roadway as officers worked the scene, and investigators say they still don't know what led to the collision.
The crash was first reported by NBC10 Philadelphia, whose Skyforce10 helicopter captured at least two fire trucks blocking the road near the scene. Aerial footage also showed a dark-colored car parked nearby with its flashers on and visible front windshield damage, though it's not clear how that vehicle relates to the fatal crash itself. Officials have not said whether anyone else was injured, and the station reports that what led to the crash remains unknown.
A Known Trouble Spot on CR 538
Elk Road carries the formal designation of Gloucester County Route 538, an undivided 24.1-mile county highway that runs from Swedesboro to Monroe Township, cutting straight through Elk Township's farmland and residential pockets, according to Wikipedia. The two-lane rural stretch has seen tragedy before: in October 2024, a double-fatal head-on crash occurred along Elk Road in front of 711 Elk Road when an eastbound vehicle crossed into opposing traffic, killing two people, per an Elk Township Police Department statement reported by The Sentinel of Gloucester County.
County officials have taken some steps toward addressing safety along the corridor. Gloucester County's Department of Public Works solicited engineering bids in May 2025 for resurfacing and safety improvements along Elk Road between Bridgeton Pike and Hardingville Road in Elk Township, according to county records. Elk Township itself is a small, rural community, spanning 19.2 square miles with an estimated 2026 population of 4,537 residents spread across unincorporated communities including Aura, Ferrell, and Monroeville, per U.S. Census Bureau data.
Part of a Wider Countywide Pattern
Thursday's crash adds to a grim tally for Gloucester County, which recorded 29 traffic fatalities across 26 fatal crashes in 2025 and 183 total road deaths between 2021 and 2025, according to New Jersey State Police records compiled by Blaise Injury Law. Earlier this year, county officials petitioned state transportation leaders to review factors behind 10 fatal crashes that have occurred since 2022 along nearby Route 55 corridors passing through Elk Township and surrounding communities, as reported by New Jersey 101.5.
Statewide, the trend has actually moved in the other direction. Fatal motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey fell roughly 15% in 2025 to 547 crashes resulting in 582 deaths. Under New Jersey Revised Statutes Section 39:4-130, drivers involved in collisions resulting in injury, death, or significant property damage are required to notify police immediately and submit a written report within 10 days, a statute that governs how crashes like Thursday's are documented and investigated.
The Elk Township Police Department is leading the investigation into Thursday's crash, with local emergency response in the rural township typically supported by volunteer fire departments including the Ferrell Fire Company and Aura Volunteer Fire Company. No further details about the victim or the circumstances of the crash have been released.
