A former Wall Street banker accused of raping a 25-year-old woman in her Midtown Manhattan apartment stood largely silent in a New York courtroom Thursday morning, as his case was pushed back to mid-December while prosecutors wait on DNA test results. Mark Harris, now 38, faces three counts of first-degree rape, four counts of first-degree sex abuse and seven counts of second-degree assault in connection with the February 25, 2025 attack, according to Daily Mail.
Harris arrived at the courthouse around 9:20 a.m. and conferred with his attorney, Zach Intrater, before Judge Michele S. Rodney called his case roughly 30 minutes later, according to Daily Mail. The hearing itself lasted less than 15 minutes. Harris did not speak during the proceeding and did not respond when asked questions as he left the courthouse, the outlet reported. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to Yahoo News.
What Prosecutors Allege Happened
Prosecutors allege Harris pulled the woman's pants down, held her against a mattress, raped her and told her she “had this coming,” per the Daily Mail's reporting. Harris was arrested on March 6, 2025, nine days after the alleged attack, according to court records cited by the same outlet. An earlier Daily Mail report on his arrest described different charges — rape in the first degree, rape in the third degree and sexual abuse in the third degree — a discrepancy with the current count sheet of three first-degree rape counts, four first-degree sex abuse counts and seven second-degree assault counts that the outlet's more recent account did not explain.
That earlier report also listed Harris's age as 35 at the time of his arrest, while Thursday's coverage identified him as 38. The case has moved forward since then: during his indictment in June, Judge Rodney ordered Harris to surrender his dual U.S. and British passports, a request made by prosecutor Ryan Murphy. He was freed after posting $150,000 bail, as reported by Daily Mail.
Case Adjourned Into December
Judge Rodney adjourned the case until December 14 as prosecutors continue to await DNA testing, the Daily Mail reported. After Thursday's hearing, Harris remained in the courtroom for about 30 minutes before Intrater escorted him out of the building's 11th floor. Harris's defense told Judge Rodney that he is now living in North Carolina, according to the outlet's account.
A Career Interrupted by the Charges
Before the allegations surfaced, Harris had built a career in banking, having spent 11 years at Japanese bank SMBC, where his LinkedIn profile described him as director of structured and project finance in New York City, according to the same report. He later joined SMBC Nikko Securities in 2022 and moved to Investec in 2023, with his listed work experience running through 2024.
Two days before the alleged attack, Harris had landed a six-figure job offer from private equity giant KKR. The firm withdrew that offer after he was charged with rape, the Daily Mail reported. The Daily Mail said it contacted Harris's attorney and the New York County District Attorney's Office for comment on the case.
