Michael Carpenter, 43, the choir director and music teacher at East Fairmont High School, is being held at North Central Regional Jail on $500,000 bond after investigators say they traced 16 videos containing child sexual abuse material to his Kik account — including footage allegedly recorded inside his own school music classroom.
According to a criminal complaint reviewed by wboy.com, Carpenter sent multiple video files through the Kik messaging app on July 25, and 13 of those files were reported to law enforcement. Authorities reviewed the files and confirmed that they depicted child sexual abuse material, the complaint states. One of the videos allegedly showed an adult male and an “apparent prepubescent female” engaged in sexual acts.
Investigators executed a search warrant on Carpenter's Kik account and say they discovered 16 videos containing CSAM that had been sent to other users on the platform. In some of those videos, the complaint alleges, Carpenter is seen performing masturbatory acts inside the music classroom at East Fairmont High School, where he has served as choral director since 2020, per the same wboy.com report.
What Carpenter Allegedly Told Investigators
Carpenter admitted to owning the Kik account and to knowingly sending videos depicting nude children, according to the outlet's account of the complaint. He reportedly told investigators he knew some of the individuals shown in the videos were obviously children, but said he could not confirm that they were engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Reports differ on how the resulting charge has been described. The station reported that Carpenter has been charged with distribution or exhibition of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, while the Dominion Post described the charge as possessing child pornography. Under West Virginia law, the statute governing this area — West Virginia Code §61-8C-3 — addresses the distribution and exhibition of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct or computer-generated child pornography, along with the associated penalties.
School District Response and Unanswered Questions
Marion County Schools said it is cooperating with investigators and that the safety and well-being of its students remain a priority, according to a statement reported by wvnews.com. Authorities have not publicly detailed whether the allegations involve East Fairmont students, and Carpenter is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, the outlet noted.
East Fairmont High School sits in Fairmont, West Virginia, a Marion County community where news of the arrest has rattled parents and students alike. The case arrives amid a string of other West Virginia educator arrests this year that wvnews.com's reporting has chronicled, though the outlet does not describe these cases as evidence of a broader statewide pattern.
Other Recent West Virginia Educator Cases
In July, federal authorities arrested former Fayette County teacher and state lawmaker David Elliott Pritt on allegations involving a teenage student, the same wvnews.com report states. In March, Mount View High School health teacher Tyree Baker, 27, was arrested and charged with 30 counts tied to alleged sexual abuse and solicitation involving a student, with his bond set at $1 million.
In May, former Calhoun County elementary school teacher and county commissioner Jacob McCumbers was indicted on 172 counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 86 counts of sexual abuse by a parent or guardian, according to the same account. Each of those cases remains separate from the allegations against Carpenter, and no connection between them has been established in the reporting reviewed.
