A shooting in southwest Albuquerque left one person dead Tuesday evening, with police blocking off nearby streets as homicide detectives and crime scene investigators descended on the area. The suspect fled before officers arrived, and no arrest had been announced as of Tuesday night.

According to ABQ Raw, the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to a reported shooting near Gibson Boulevard Southwest and De Anza Drive Southwest. The outlet reported that the victim, believed to be a female suffering from at least one gunshot wound, was transported by fire rescue crews to a local hospital with critical injuries before dying from those injuries. Officers blocked off streets in the area while homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were called out to work the case, ABQ Raw said, adding that it would update readers if more information became available.

Other outlets covering the shooting gave differing accounts of exactly where and when it happened. KRQE reported that officers responded to the shooting in the area of 98th and Gibson, while KOAT reported the shooting happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday near De Anza Drive Southwest and Gibson Boulevard Southwest. Both stations agreed that one person was taken to a hospital, where they died, and that an investigation was underway.

Few Details Released So Far

As of Tuesday night, APD had not released any other information about the shooting, per the station's report. KOAT noted that anyone with information is asked to call Albuquerque police, though the station did not publish a specific tip line number in its account. Neither station identified a suspect or described a motive, and the victim's identity had not been released.

This is not the first deadly shooting to strike the Gibson Boulevard corridor in southwest Albuquerque. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old male died and a 17-year-old female was shot several times and left in stable condition after a shooting at an Allsup's at 9501 Gibson Boulevard Southwest, according to KRQE, which reported that APD homicide detectives led that investigation. The same station also reported on the death of a man found in an apartment-complex parking lot at 920 Continental Loop Southeast near Louisiana and Gibson boulevards, a case to which homicide investigators were likewise called.

Citywide Crime Trends Mixed

The shooting comes as APD's own midyear numbers paint a complicated picture of violent crime in Albuquerque. Homicides fell from 36 in 2025 to 29 in 2026, a 19% decrease, for the January-to-June comparison, according to figures reported by the Albuquerque Journal. At the same time, narcotics offenses increased 76% over the same period, and aggravated and simple assaults rose roughly 3% to 4% compared with 2025. Albuquerque police also reported shooting seven people in 2026 through the midyear mark, down from 10 during the same period in 2025, per the same report.

Tuesday's shooting remains under active investigation, and key details — including the victim's identity, the suspect's whereabouts, and a confirmed motive — have not been made public. ABQ Raw said it would update its report as more information becomes available.
