A person was shot in Fayetteville early Sunday morning and rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds, as officers swarmed a residential stretch off North Reilly Road before dawn. The victim's condition has not been released.
Fayetteville police responded to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of Dandridge Drive around 5 a.m., according to WRAL. The injured person was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with gunshot wounds, the station reported. Fayetteville police are investigating the shooting, though no suspect description or motive has been released.
The Dandridge Drive shooting comes less than a week after a separate, deadlier shooting on the other side of the city. Officers responded to the 6200 block of Yadkin Road around 3:26 a.m. on Oct. 19, where one person was killed and two others injured, per the Fayetteville Observer. Officers and medical personnel arrived at that scene to find three people suffering from gunshot wounds, the newspaper reported.
A Mixed Picture in the City's Crime Numbers
The back-to-back shootings arrive as Fayetteville's broader crime statistics tell a complicated story. The police department's second-quarter report showed 11 homicide cases involving 14 victims from January through June of this year, compared with 24 cases involving 26 victims over the same stretch in 2025 — a 54% drop, according to CBS 17.
At the same time, overall crime in the city ticked up slightly, by just over 1%, during the first half of the year, the outlet reported. Investigators had solved 100% of the department's homicide cases so far in 2026, per the same report. The station also noted that the department was more than 90% staffed and expected to fill all remaining vacancies by January 2027.
Neither the Dandridge Drive nor Yadkin Road shootings have produced publicly released suspect information, and it remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected in any way. Residents looking for updates on either case can turn to the city's Crime Data and Police Reports portal, which the city says is meant to keep the community informed. Fayetteville police have not released further details on the condition of the person shot on Dandridge Drive.
