A commercial building on Frontage Road in North Stonington caught fire Wednesday evening, sending heavy smoke into the night sky and drawing firefighters and ambulance crews from several towns to the scene. The blaze broke out at 75 Frontage Road, a road that runs parallel to southbound I-95 between the Route 49 and Route 2 interchanges.
Initial alarms came in at about 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to The Westerly Sun, which reported that fire and ambulance apparatus and personnel from multiple towns responded to the address. A crew from NBC 10 News observed heavy smoke pouring from the building as firefighters worked the scene.
What We Know So Far
Authorities did not immediately release additional details about the fire, per the same NBC 10 account. The Old Mystic Fire Department posted photos of the fire on Facebook, according to WFSB, and the images showed heavy smoke along with visible burn damage to the exterior of the building. Firefighters have not said whether anyone was hurt in the blaze, WFSB reports, and the station noted it had reached out for more information.
The Old Mystic Fire Department shared photos from the scene on Facebook. The full extent of the damage, the cause of the fire, and whether the flames have been fully extinguished remain unclear as of Thursday morning.
A Pattern Of Road Closures Amid Fire Response
Structure fires elsewhere in the region have similarly prompted road closures as crews work to contain the flames. In nearby Stonington, police previously closed Diving Street while emergency crews dealt with a separate structure fire, according to Patch, with officers advising drivers to avoid the area until the scene was clear. It is not known whether similar road restrictions were put in place near Frontage Road during Wednesday night's response.
Hoodline will continue to follow this developing story as fire officials release more information about the cause of the blaze, the condition of the building, and whether anyone was injured.
