A fire broke out at Dover Baptist Church on Polkville Road in Shelby on Sunday morning, forcing the century-old congregation to cancel its morning services as fire crews responded around 8 a.m. The cause of the blaze and any injuries remained unknown at the time of reporting, and the church took to social media with a simple plea: “Pray for our church.”
The fire was reported by Queen City News, which noted that local residents and other churches quickly flooded social media with prayers and messages of support for the Dover Baptist Church community. The outlet said it planned to update its report as more information becomes available, and as of Sunday morning, officials had not released a cause or damage estimate for the fire.
Dover Baptist Church sits on Polkville Road and has deep roots in Cleveland County, with organizational history as part of the regional Kings Mountain Baptist Association dating back to 1924, according to records held by the ZSR Library.

Why Older Churches Face Added Risk
Fires at houses of worship are not rare nationally. An average of 1,780 fires occur annually at religious and funeral properties in the United States, with cooking equipment, heating systems, and intentional arson each cited as leading causes, according to data compiled by Raizner Slania LLP from National Fire Protection Association figures. Older sanctuaries like Dover Baptist's are also structurally vulnerable: only about 12% of U.S. religious buildings have automatic fire sprinkler systems installed, a gap that fire safety researchers cited by QRFS say often leads to heavier property loss once a fire takes hold in a legacy structure's high open ceilings.
No cause determination has been announced in connection with the Dover Baptist Church fire.
A Season of Fires Around Shelby
Sunday's fire adds to a string of notable blazes that have touched Shelby in recent years. Just last month, a major commercial fire erupted at Auto Parts U-Pull & Scrap Metal on County Home Road, sending black smoke across Cleveland County and drawing multiple fire agencies in a scene that echoed a prior 2020 blaze at the same site. And in October 2024, Red Bridges BBQ Lodge, another well-known Shelby landmark, suffered a structure fire that caused $30,000 in damage before crews contained it using an internal firewall, preventing total loss of the historic restaurant.
For now, the extent of the damage to Dover Baptist Church and the cause of Sunday's fire remain undetermined. The congregation's request for prayers reflects the uncertainty facing members as they wait for answers about their sanctuary's future and when in-person worship might resume.
