A Corridor With a Troubled Fire History
A Corridor With a Troubled Fire History This stretch of South Birmingham near Valley Avenue and Temple Crest Drive has seen a string of serious apartment fires in recent months. In August, a major blaze at a neighboring complex affected around 14 units and displaced at least 20 residents, WVTM reported. Just a month before that, an overnight fire at The Park at Sunderland on Valley Crest Drive damaged eight units and forced six families out of their homes, the Daily Dispatch reported.
The corridor has also drawn scrutiny from code enforcement officials. Earlier this month, Hoodline reported that the Municipal Housing Code Abatement Board scheduled a review tied to a mold and rat lawsuit at the 583-unit Park at Buckingham complex off West Valley Avenue, after Homewood Fire Department officials found some units unsafe and code officers posted condemnation notices.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, led by Fire Chief Cory Moon since 2020, operates 31 active stations across five battalions with more than 600 firefighters, according to Bhamwiki. The department's workload is substantial — it logged 6,297 emergency calls in July 2025 alone, averaging roughly 203 calls a day, and has recorded more than 70,000 emergency calls and over 10,000 fire incidents during full operational years, per the department's own figures.
Damage and Displacement Remain Unknown
It remains unknown how many units were damaged or how many residents were displaced by Tuesday night's fire at 2700 Homewood Apartments on Temple Crest Drive, and the cause of the blaze has not been released.
This remains a developing story, and Hoodline will update it as officials release further details on the cause, the extent of the damage, and any displaced residents.
