A 56-year-old man was stabbed once in the leg aboard a Q44-SBS bus near Main Street and 39th Avenue in Flushing, after what police described as a verbal dispute with another passenger that turned violent. EMS rushed the victim to nearby Booth Memorial Hospital, where authorities said he was listed in stable condition. Police said a person of interest was taken into custody following the assault.
The attack, which happened Sunday according to the NYPD, unfolded just one block from the Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue transit hub, a major crossroads that includes the No. 7 subway and a Long Island Rail Road station, according to the New York Post. The stretch of Main Street sits at the heart of Downtown Flushing's busway corridor, which the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has described as serving riders on the Q44 SBS and other routes through the neighborhood. The MTA has also called the Q44 SBS one of the busiest routes in its entire bus network.
What Police Have Confirmed So Far
Beyond the verbal dispute that preceded the stabbing, police have not released the identity of the victim, the identity of the person of interest, or any charges. It's also unclear whether that person remains in custody or was later released; the stabbing occurred around 9:20 a.m. Sunday. The report notes only that the confrontation escalated quickly aboard the bus before the knife came out.
Flushing's Main Street corridor has seen other violent episodes in recent months. Back in January, police from the 109th Precinct sought three suspects after a 14-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed in the right shoulder during an armed robbery on Main Street when he refused to hand over his cellphone, according to QNS. That teenager was also listed in stable condition after the attack.
Other Bus Incidents
In June, a 73-year-old man was punched multiple times and stabbed in the left shoulder aboard an M104 bus in Manhattan after two people engaged him in a dispute, per PIX11; he was also taken to a hospital in stable condition. The outlet separately reported that a 36-year-old man was slashed in the head while riding a BX22 bus in the Bronx, with sources saying a dispute preceded that attack as well.
In Brooklyn, the violence took an even stranger turn when an MTA bus driver himself was accused of stabbing a passenger during a dispute on a B41 bus near Foster Avenue and Flatbush Avenue, according to ABC7 New York. Police said driver Ian Bascombe, 55, displayed a knife and stabbed passenger Quentin Branch, 33, in the head and left leg; both men were arrested in that case.
What the Local Numbers Show
Precinct-level data offers a more mixed picture for the neighborhood around Sunday's attack. Through Jan. 11, felony assaults in the 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, were down 14.3% year over year, with a dozen reported compared with 14 at the same point in 2025, per QNS's earlier report. Robberies in the precinct had also fallen 50% over the same period, dropping from four incidents to two.
The NYPD publishes monthly and annual transit-bus reports disaggregated by district and precinct, and updates its borough and precinct crime statistics weekly.
