Foot Locker is lacing up with Madison Square Garden. The retailer has signed a multi-year deal with Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. that makes it the official athletic footwear retailer of the New York Knicks, starting with the 2026-27 NBA season.
The partnership was announced on October 14, according to Madison Square Garden Sports Corp., which says Foot Locker will be showcased at every Knicks home game at the Garden throughout the season. The deal also includes a dedicated Foot Locker retail activation inside the Knicks Team Store in Chase Square, which opens to the public on game days and sells Knicks gear, according to WDHA FM.
Doug Jossem said Foot Locker joining the Knicks' family of marketing partners was a good fit, per WDHA FM, while Brett O'Brien said the partnership brings together two brands with deep New York roots and reinforces Foot Locker's commitment to basketball, the station reported. Foot Locker will also operate curated pop-up shops inside Madison Square Garden during select home games, a perk Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. confirmed will roll out as part of the agreement.
Contests, Signage and a Theme Night on Tap
The arrangement extends well beyond the shoe shelf. It includes in-arena and on-court contests, LED ribbon signage and exterior digital signage outside the Garden, plus a dedicated Knicks theme night featuring Foot Locker branding, games and fan events, per the same account from Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. Certain Knicks wins will also trigger Foot Locker store promotions, according to WDHA FM.
Foot Locker is set to bring a mobile activation called the Fan Express to stops across New York City before the experience culminates at Madison Square Garden, according to a release distributed via PR Newswire. That stop is expected to feature ticket giveaways, live podcast recordings and prizes, the release states. The retailer will also be woven into a Knicks original content series across the team's digital channels and will appear in the Fan Zone section of the Knicks Official App, per the same release.
No specific dates have been named yet for the theme night, Fan Express stops, pop-up events, or any product drops tied to the deal, according to WDHA FM. The Knicks open their season against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.
A Turnaround Push Amid Slumping Sales
The Knicks tie-up lands at a tense moment for Foot Locker's business. The company's segment posted $1.74 billion in net sales during the second quarter of fiscal 2026, while pro forma comparable sales fell 3.6 percent, according to WWD. WWD attributed the slide to challenging conditions across the broader athletic footwear marketplace.
Parent company DICK'S Sporting Goods, which acquired Foot Locker for $2.4 billion in 2025, lowered its full-year outlook for the Foot Locker business to a range of flat to down 2 percent, as reported by CNBC. Foot Locker was projected to post an operating loss of between $40 million and $80 million in 2026, according to a report from Yahoo Finance.
Foot Locker also marked the news on social media, posting on X that “It's official… champions lace up here” alongside confirmation that it is now an official partner of the New York Knicks, the company wrote on its account. Whether the Garden-sized visibility translates into a turnaround remains to be seen, but for now the retailer is betting on basketball in the city where it first built its name.
