A Fresno man was sentenced to 100 years to life in state prison on Friday for fatally shooting both of his parents more than four years ago. His father, William McElhaney, was found dead in the front yard of the family's northeast Fresno home, while his mother, Sylvia McElhaney, was found dead inside. Julian Charles McElhaney, now 27, admitted to police that he shot and killed them following an argument at the family's house.
Commissioner Daniel Brickey handed down the sentence at a Fresno County Superior Court hearing, capping a case that began with a plea agreement McElhaney entered on September 17, 2026, according to GV Wire. The sentencing closed out a prosecution that started on April 10, 2022, when officers responded to reports of shots fired at a home in the 6100 block of North Tenth Street near Stuart Avenue, close to Cedar and Bullard avenues, as reported by KRDO. KMPH Fox 26 also reported the sentencing.
Officers who responded that Sunday afternoon found William McElhaney dead in the front yard and Sylvia McElhaney dead inside the home, both having suffered multiple gunshot wounds, per the KMPH Fox 26 report. McElhaney had called dispatchers himself and told police he had shot someone; when officers arrived, they found him on the front lawn and detained him at the scene.
A Decades-Long Career Cut Short
William “Will” McElhaney was 55 years old and had spent 19 years working in plant operations for the Clovis Unified School District, where he specialized in carpet installation and repair, according to the station's report from True Crime News. Sylvia McElhaney was 64 years old at the time of her death.
Inside the home, Fresno police recovered multiple firearms, and Police Chief Paco Balderrama said at a news conference afterward that investigators were looking into whether mental health played a role in the shootings, the same outlet noted. The double killing marked the 14th and 15th homicides recorded in the city of Fresno in 2022, even as the city saw an overall decline in homicides that year compared to previous years.
A Negotiated Plea
Prosecutors filed charges against McElhaney on April 12, 2022. The case ultimately resolved with a plea agreement in September rather than a trial.
McElhaney received a sentence of 100 years to life. He was 22 years old when he was arrested in 2022 and spent more than four years in custody before his sentencing this week at age 27.
Family Speaks Directly to the Man Who Killed Their Relatives
Family members addressed the court about the lasting impact of the murders before Brickey issued the sentence. The victims' nephew, Rudy Cruz, read a statement on behalf of the family, telling McElhaney directly that “the ripple effects of what you did will forever live in the rest of our lives,” according to GV Wire's account of the hearing.
The case closes a chapter that began with a 911 call from McElhaney himself on a Sunday afternoon in April 2022 and ended, four and a half years later, with a sentence of 100 years to life.
