A Year of Historic Lows for Fresno Violence

Wednesday's shooting comes amid a broader downward trend in violent crime across Fresno. The city recorded 22 homicides in 2025, its lowest total in 51 years and below the previous five-decade low of 23 set in 1974, according to data reported by GV Wire. Gang-related homicides fell sharply as well, dropping from 22 in 2024 to nine in 2025, per the same outlet.

Non-fatal shootings also declined last year, with 162 reported in 2025 compared to 221 in 2024, a 78% drop from the 732 shootings recorded in 2020. Shootings that struck a person fell 29%, from 107 in 2024 to 70 in 2025, GV Wire reported. Overall violent crime in the city decreased 5% in 2025, while property crime dropped 24%.

Police Credit Strategy Shift and Enforcement Partnerships

Fresno police have pointed to a shift in tactics as part of the decline, saying the department began treating non-fatal shootings with the same urgency as homicides by immediately deploying detectives to investigate them, GV Wire reported. Officials also credited the Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium with an 85% reduction in gang-related shootings since 2020, as well as federal prosecutions and community intervention programs like Advance Peace with helping drive down gang-related killings.

The department reported recovering 1,502 guns in 2025 and made 2,449 DUI arrests, up from 2,284 the year before. GV Wire reported a 105% homicide clearance rate for 2025, including cases solved from prior years.

No details have been released about who was behind Wednesday's shooting near Hawes and Kearney, and police have not said whether the case is connected to any other incident. The investigation remains active.
