Tucked inside a Valero convenience store near the intersection of Hero Way and Ronald Reagan Boulevard, a new Mexican kitchen has started drawing hungry commuters and nearby residents with quesabirria, flautas and breakfast tacos. The Abuelos Kitchen opened July 3, 2026, at 17680 Ronald Reagan Blvd. in Leander, run by co-owners Maria Camarena and Rudy Cordero, who say they started the venture simply because they both enjoy cooking.

According to Community Impact, the gas station eatery's menu extends well beyond typical convenience-store fare, with quesadillas, hamburgers, burritos and even beer and wine on tap available to dine-in customers. The restaurant shares its building with Beer Geek, a specialty craft beer and IPA retail store that opened on the exact same date, according to a separate report from Community Impact, giving the shared Valero location both a kitchen and a packaged-beer retailer under one roof.

Camarena isn't new to the gas-station-kitchen formula. She already operates Maria's Kitchen out of a similar convenience store setup at 7500 West State Highway 29 in Georgetown, specializing in breakfast tacos with homemade tortillas, quesabirria plates, tortas and burritos, per Restaurantji. That existing business appears to have shaped the blueprint for the Leander location, which leans into similar birria-and-taco territory.

Menu Expands Beyond the Basics

Local food coverage has pointed to a standout dish, a brisket birria plate served with beans and rice. The kitchen offers breakfast, lunch and dinner through dine-in, pickup and delivery via Grubhub and DoorDash, a mix that squarely targets morning commuter traffic along the corridor.

Cordero has indicated plans to build a patio area as part of a future expansion, per the original Community Impact report, though no timeline has been specified. For now, the business occupies its spot inside the Valero convenience store just off a stretch of Ronald Reagan Boulevard that has seen a steady wave of new commercial activity this year.

A Neighborhood Built for Growth

The Abuelos Kitchen sits near Palmera Ridge, a 426-acre master-planned residential community designed for roughly 1,000 homes at full build-out, located just north of Hero Way off Ronald Reagan Boulevard, according to the Austin Real Estate Homes Blog. The development includes single-family homes, parks and trails along the San Gabriel River, giving the new kitchen a built-in base of residential customers close by.

That growth isn't isolated to one neighborhood. Leander added 7,004 residents between 2023 and 2024, an 8.7% annual growth rate that ranked it the 10th largest-gaining Texas city with a population over 50,000, per Community Impact's earlier reporting on census data. Williamson County gained 23,800 residents from 2024 to 2025. Regional transportation forecasts suggest its population could double to 1.6 million by 2050, according to the Williamson County Government.

A Leander Kitchen Finds Its Place

The Abuelos Kitchen's debut adds a dining option along Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

With Leander growing, a small, family-run gas station kitchen is carving out its own corner of the market with birria plates.
