Georgie's and Bar George has closed for good, ending a nearly five-year run at Sarasota's University Town Center that began with artificial garden walls and brunch service. The restaurant was located at 229 N. Cattlemen Road, Suite 69, in UTC's West District.
Owner George Wood, a member of the family behind Jane's Cafe on 3rd in Naples, opened Georgie's in late 2021, serving brunch, lunch and dinner alongside its attached bar area, Bar George. The concept borrowed heavily from the family's Naples flagship, which Jane Wood established after relocating to Florida in 1998 and which has operated on 3rd Street South for more than two decades, according to Christie's International Real Estate.
Before Georgie's even opened, Wood had outlined ambitions for the UTC location that went beyond a typical restaurant buildout. When the project was first announced in October 2020, the space was designed with artificial greenery and floral wall displays meant to simulate outdoor garden dining inside an enclosed retail setting, as reported by Your Observer.
The Lily Cafe closed before Georgie's did, and the Breakfast Company, which now has multiple locations including one at UTC, took over that space in 2023, the Herald-Tribune reported.
A Revolving Door of Restaurants at UTC
Georgie's exit adds to a string of closures along the same commercial corridor. JPan Sushi & Grill shut its UTC location, though it still operates another Sarasota restaurant and is working to find a new UTC space, per the Herald-Tribune's reporting. Five-O Donut Co. also closed its UTC shop, though it still has three other locations across Sarasota-Manatee.
Even as those spaces empty out, Benderson Development has moved quickly to fill them. Just Salad is among the recent additions at UTC. More additions are on the way, including Hawkers Asian Street Food, which Hoodline previously reported is taking over the former JPan space on Cattlemen Road with plans for its first-ever standalone street food sweet shop.
More Big Names Headed to the West District
The pipeline of incoming tenants doesn't stop there. Bricktop's, Olivia and On Swann are slated to join UTC's dining scene.
That churn reflects the sheer scale of the commercial district surrounding Georgie's former space. UTC spans more than 4 million square feet across 250 retail stores and 80 dining venues, according to Benderson Development's own account of the center. The enclosed Mall at University Town Center, the retail core of that broader development, opened October 16, 2014, as an 862,000-square-foot regional shopping destination co-developed by Taubman Centers and Benderson Development, per the International Council of Shopping Centers. Benderson expanded its footprint further in June 2026, announcing an 86,000-square-foot tenant expansion bringing 12 new businesses to the complex, including a 48,000-square-foot IKEA with its own Swedish Bite cafe in the West District.
A Tough Market Even for Well-Known Concepts
Georgie's closure fits a broader pattern of independent restaurants struggling to sustain multi-year runs even amid strong consumer spending nationally.
Whether the Wood family plans to relocate or refocus its dining ventures elsewhere in Southwest Florida, and what tenant Benderson Development ultimately lands for the vacated Cattlemen Road suite, remain open questions as UTC continues its rapid pace of turnover.
