Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has opened what it calls its largest distribution center in North America in Upper Macungie Township, a 160,000-square-foot operation employing 45 people that ships roughly 90 million prescriptions and reaches about one in four Americans, according to the company. The facility marks a major bet on the Lehigh Valley's logistics corridor at a moment when demand for large warehouse space in the region is outpacing supply.

WFMZ reported that this is Glenmark's largest distribution center in North America, as reported by WFMZ. The station reported that 45 people currently work at the 160,000-square-foot site, where prescription and over-the-counter medications are picked, packed and shipped out to customers across the country.

One in Four Americans, One Massive Supply Chain

Marc Kikuchi, Glenmark's president and business head of North America, said the scale of the operation is striking even by industry standards. “One out of every four Americans gets a product from this facility,” Kikuchi said, per the station's report. Around 90 million prescriptions move through the center alone, the company told WFMZ, with medications arriving from manufacturing sites around the world, including a Glenmark plant in North Carolina.

Kikuchi also said the jobs on-site span more than warehouse logistics — distribution staff and warehouse pickers and packers work alongside quality-control employees whose job is ensuring products comply with FDA regulations, the station's report notes. Glenmark currently does work for more than 30 companies, according to the same account, underscoring the facility's role as a hub not just for Glenmark's own products but for partners relying on its distribution network.

Why Upper Macungie Won Out Over 130 Other Sites

Site head Ravi Kannan said the company cast a wide net before settling on the Lehigh Valley, reviewing about 130 properties across several states, the station's report states. Kannan pointed to “the talented workforce, the strong logistics network, and our proximity to our customers and U.S. headquarters” as the deciding factors, according to the same account. Kikuchi struck a similar note of local investment, saying Glenmark is proud to be part of the community and wants to be a long-term partner, per the report.

That local commitment comes with growing pains already in sight. Kikuchi said Glenmark expects to outgrow the Upper Macungie facility within the next three years and will look for expansion opportunities as business needs arise, the station reported. In the nearer term, the facility plans to hire more employees around the holidays, according to the same source.

A Warehouse Boom Across the Lehigh Valley

Glenmark's expansion lands amid a broader surge in Lehigh Valley industrial activity. New leasing activity in the region totaled about 2.1 million square feet in the first quarter of 2026, outpacing the year-to-date rate from the same period in 2025, according to the Morning Call. The newspaper reported that the industrial vacancy rate dipped to 10.9% in the same quarter, down from 11% a year earlier, even as the region's construction pipeline held at just over 1 million square feet and average industrial rents reached about $11.51 per square foot.

CBRE told the Morning Call that demand for larger warehouses in the Lehigh Valley is increasing while available inventory remains limited, a dynamic that helps explain why companies like Glenmark are competing for space in the region. The paper also noted that the Valley's largest industrial lease of the first quarter — 726,000 square feet at a Prologis-owned warehouse — was signed just blocks away, also in Upper Macungie Township.

Part of a National Push in Pharmaceutical Logistics

Glenmark's buildout follows a broader industry trend of drugmakers and distributors investing heavily in forward distribution infrastructure. Cardinal Health announced plans in September 2025 for a new flagship 230,000-square-foot forward distribution center in Indianapolis, according to a statement from Cardinal Health. That facility, expected to be fully operational by fall 2027 and create more than 100 new jobs, will feature an industry-first robotic storage and retrieval system developed with Swisslog, the company said, as its distribution segment already handles more than 70,000 pharmaceutical and specialty deliveries daily nationwide.

Glenmark itself has been expanding its U.S. footprint on multiple fronts. The company announced in April that it would take over end-to-end commercialization and distribution of its allergy treatment RYALTRIS in the United States, according to a release distributed via PR Newswire, with the product launching in 11 additional markets during its fiscal 2026 and now sold in 55 countries worldwide. Globally, Glenmark operates 11 manufacturing facilities across four continents with a commercial footprint in more than 80 countries, per the same release.

For now, the Upper Macungie site stands as the centerpiece of that expansion in North America, with Kikuchi's own words framing it as just the beginning rather than the finish line. Whatever shape Glenmark's next move takes, the company has made clear that growth, not stability, is the plan for its newest and largest distribution hub.
