A 55-year-old Gloversville man is being held without bail at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility after New York State Police arrested him on charges that he raped and sexually abused a child younger than 11. Michael Calhoun was taken into custody on October 12 following a months-long investigation that began in January, when troopers first received reports that an adult man had sexual contact with a child.
Investigation Traces Back to January Report
According to news10.com, New York State Police launched the investigation on January 19 after investigators received information about sexual contact between a child and an adult man in Saratoga County. Investigators allege that Calhoun subjected a child younger than 11 years old to sexual activity at a property in Galway back in mid-January, the outlet reported.
The case took several months to build before troopers made an arrest. Calhoun was taken into custody at State Police Latham on October 12, according to WRGB, and was then transported to State Police Mayfield for processing before his arraignment.
Charges Include Predatory Sexual Assault, Rape
Troopers charged Calhoun with predatory sexual assault against a child, two counts of first-degree rape, and first-degree sexual abuse, the station's report states. Under New York law, a person 18 or older can be found guilty of predatory sexual assault against a child when the underlying conduct includes first-degree rape, first-degree aggravated sexual abuse, or a qualifying course of sexual conduct, according to the relevant section of the New York Penal Law.
Calhoun was arraigned in Charlton Town Court, which remanded him to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail, per the same account. New York's bail statute gives courts discretion to order recognizance, non-monetary release conditions, bail where authorized, or commitment to the sheriff, though a town court cannot order recognizance or bail when a defendant faces a class A felony charge, according to the New York Criminal Procedure Law.
Investigation Remains Active
New York State Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, the outlet noted. No additional details about the case, including the specific property in Galway or further dates of the alleged conduct beyond mid-January, have been released.
