Ascension Parish deputies have arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery that investigators say unfolded along Babin Road in the Gonzales area, leaving a victim injured and personal property allegedly stolen. Chase Cleveland, 36, and Dontrell Washington, 40, now face a combined list of felony charges tied to the July 12 incident.
What Deputies Say Happened on Babin Road
According to the sheriff’s office, Cleveland and Washington were involved in a physical altercation with a victim along Babin Road on July 12, as reported by WBRZ. During that altercation, the two men allegedly stole from the victim, who was injured in the scuffle, the station reported. A separate account from a report published by Yahoo News adds that deputies responded July 12 to a reported armed robbery, and that detectives learned the matter was tied to a previously arranged meeting involving a potential transaction.
That same report states an altercation occurred during the encounter, resulting in injuries to an unidentified person, with personal property taken in the process. Specific details about what was taken, what weapon may have been involved, or the nature of the arranged meeting have not been independently verified.
Conflicting Details on Where the Suspects Are From
The two accounts of the case diverge on one notable point: where each suspect is from. WBRZ, citing the sheriff’s office, identified 36-year-old Chase Cleveland as being from Gonzales and 40-year-old Dontrell Washington as being from Thibodaux. The report from Yahoo News, however, identified Washington as being from Gonzales and Cleveland as being from Thibodaux. The discrepancy between the two accounts has not been resolved.
Charges Facing Each Suspect
Cleveland was arrested and charged with armed robbery, armed robbery with use of a firearm, home invasion, aggravated assault with a firearm, criminal conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and felon in possession of a firearm, per the station’s report. Washington faces charges of principal to armed robbery and criminal conspiracy to commit armed robbery, the outlet noted.
The case remains tied to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, which announced the arrests on its Facebook page. No court records, booking documents, or case disposition have been made publicly available to independently confirm the charges or any outcomes moving forward.
