Armed Man Pointed Gun at Deputies, Sheriff Says
As deputies worked the scene, an armed man emerged from the residence and refused to follow law enforcement commands, the same Count on 2 report states. The outlet, citing Sheriff Duane Lewis, said the man exited the home with a firearm, waved it around, and pointed it at deputies before gunshots were eventually fired. Three deputies were involved in the shooting, and none were injured, the sheriff's office said.
Shooting Under Investigation
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which by state practice investigates law enforcement shootings, is also looking into the incident.
Berkeley County deputies have previously fired on a civilian. In April 2025, a Berkeley County sheriff's deputy fatally shot 17-year-old Tyren Kinloch during a traffic stop near Clements Ferry Road and Rivers Reach Drive in Wando, according to the Post and Courier. SLED said at the time that Kinloch was carrying a pistol modified for automatic fire, and that no officers were hurt in that encounter. It was South Carolina's 15th officer-involved shooting of 2025 and the second involving a Berkeley County deputy that year.
No further details on the identities of those involved in Wednesday's shooting, the specific circumstances that led deputies to fire, or SLED's findings have been released. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
