The Montclair home where Gov. Mikie Sherrill and her husband, Jason Hedberg, raised their children for 16 years is now for sale, with an asking price of $3.499 million. The six-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom Victorian at 176 South Mountain Avenue sits on more than an acre and comes with a lighted sports court, a far cry from the $1.675 million the couple paid for it back in 2010.
The 1865 Empire Victorian is owned by Sherrill and Hedberg, now New Jersey's first gentleman, according to property tax records cited by Montclair Local. The listing touts updated baths and laundry, new smart-home technology, HVAC, an outdoor hot tub, a built-in generator and a sprinkler system, on top of the historic home's grounds and sports court. Property records reviewed by PropertyShark put the home's total space at 6,434 square feet.
Katie Scandalios, the listing agent with Stanton Company Realtors, described the property as extraordinarily unique, per the same Montclair Local report. Showings are by appointment only, and the listing agent plans to hold an open house for real estate agents, according to the outlet.
From Montclair to the Governor's Mansion
Sherrill and Hedberg's move out of Montclair followed her January swearing-in as New Jersey's 57th governor, after the Democratic former congresswoman won a 14-point landslide victory in 2025. The family completed its move to Drumthwacket, the governor's official residence in Princeton, in August, as NJ.com reported at the time. The outlet's April report had previously noted Sherrill's office said the family planned to live at Drumthwacket for the governor's full tenure, a plan that has since been carried out.
Accounts differ on exactly how rare that move was. NJ.com's August report described Sherrill as the second governor ever to live in Drumthwacket full time and the first since Gov. Jim McGreevey left in 2004, while the outlet's earlier April report said she would be the third governor to live full time at the mansion since it became the governor's residence in 1981. Drumthwacket itself is a 20-room Greek Revival house built in 1835, now serving as New Jersey's official governor's mansion in Princeton.
In their own statement following the move, Sherrill and Hedberg said Montclair and Essex County were where they grew their family and raised their children for the past 16 years, calling it home even as they embraced Princeton as their new one. The governor's official residence remains Drumthwacket, while she works from an office in the State House in Trenton, according to the State of New Jersey.
A Hot Market for a High-Profile Address
The sale lands in an unusually active moment for Montclair real estate. Realtor.com named Montclair the No. 2 hottest place to buy a home in the United States in August, the Montclair Local report notes, and the nearby historic mansion known as Daybreak on South Mountain Avenue sold for $5 million in January.
Property tax records show the home assessed at $1.895 million, per Montclair Local, a figure that closely matches PropertyShark's listing of a $1,895,400 assessment. Current property taxes on the home total $66,642, and the town is due for a broader property tax revaluation, with new values ordered to be in place by 2028, according to the same Montclair Local report.
