A man wanted in the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Alexander Jones in Grand Rapids has been found in Florida, charged with murder, and brought back to Michigan nearly two months after the killing. Sharmarieo Williams faces the murder charge in connection with Jones’ death, which happened just after midnight on Sept. 2.
Jones was found fatally wounded after Grand Rapids police responded to an address in the 2900 block of Marshall Avenue SE, according to MLive.com. Separately, arcwestmichigan.com reported that officers responded to a shooting Wednesday just after midnight near Southeast Marshall Avenue and Southeast 20th Street. Emergency responders took Jones to a hospital, where he later died, per that outlet’s reporting.
The Kent County Medical Examiner ruled Jones’ death a homicide after an autopsy, arcwestmichigan.com reported at the time, when no suspect had yet been identified or arrested. That changed when investigators eventually connected Williams to the case.
Suspect Located Out of State, Extradited to Michigan
Tampa police’s fugitive apprehension unit helped capture Williams in Florida, police said, according to the same MLive report. Williams was then extradited to Michigan ahead of his arraignment in the September shooting death, according to a report from wzzm13.com.
The station’s report does not detail where in Florida Williams was located or the specific circumstances surrounding his arrest beyond the involvement of the Tampa fugitive unit. Williams is now charged with murder in the death of Jones, the same account notes.
Details remain limited on what led investigators to Florida and what evidence ties Williams to the shooting. It is not yet known whether Williams has retained an attorney, and no defense statement has been made available as of this report.
