Police say a Webster man was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car at a Greece intersection, and when officers tried to sort out what was going on, he reached for a knife sitting in the center console. By the time the stop was over, investigators say they had pulled a loaded .45-caliber handgun from the back seat.
Officers discovered 41-year-old Jeremy Bellows slumped over the steering wheel while his vehicle was stopped at an intersection, according to 13WHAM. As officers approached, they reported detecting a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from inside the car. That is when, police say, Bellows reached toward a knife in the center console — prompting officers to detain him and secure the weapon before it could become a bigger problem.
Loaded Handgun Turns Up in Back Seat
With Bellows detained, officers searched the vehicle and say they found a 1911-style .45-caliber handgun loaded with eight rounds of ammunition sitting in plain view on the back seat, per the same account from 13WHAM. The discovery came after officers spotted the vehicle while on patrol.
Bellows was taken to Greece police headquarters for processing before being transported to the Monroe County Jail for arraignment, according to RochesterFirst. He now faces a weapon charge along with driving while intoxicated.
Reports Differ on Exact Weapon Charge
Accounts of the exact charge vary slightly. RochesterFirst reported that Bellows was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and driving while intoxicated, while 13WHAM described the charge more broadly as criminal possession of a weapon and DWI. NewYorkUpstate.com also covered the arrest, reporting the same sequence of events involving the knife and the loaded handgun.
