Isabella Myers rubbed a genie lamp inside the office at David J. Jones Elementary School in Greensboro and looked up to find her mother standing there. The second-grader had been told that rubbing the lamp would make her wish come true, and it did, in the form of Air Force Staff Sergeant Quiana Quiros, home from an overseas deployment for a surprise only the adults around her knew was coming.
A Gift With a Hidden Purpose
According to wxii12.com, Isabella is a second-grade student at the Greensboro school, and her mother gave her a genie lamp as a gift before the reunion. Isabella said her mom had told her that if she rubbed the lamp, her wish would come true, and after she did just that in the school office, Quiros appeared, according to the same report. Isabella also said she missed her mother very much, according to WBAL News Radio, which described the moment as a surprise of a lifetime.
The gesture carried extra weight given how long mother and daughter had been apart. Quiros was deployed overseas in March, leaving Isabella in the care of her parents, according to a report from RedState. The outlet reports that Quiros joined the Air Force as a reservist in 2021 and is now a staff sergeant.
From Deployment to a School Office Surprise
Quiros learned in early October that she would be granted leave to come home, the RedState report notes. Rather than simply showing up, she coordinated with staff at the Greensboro school to turn her return into a moment Isabella would remember, arranging for the genie lamp to be the trigger for the reveal, per the same account.
The plan worked exactly as designed. Isabella rubbed the lamp believing she was simply testing her mother's promise, and instead found her standing in the office, having traveled home from her deployment. WBAL News Radio framed the moment as the payoff of a single wish, capturing what had been months of separation collapsing into a single, surprise embrace.
