Greg's Kitchen, the Manayunk breakfast spot known for its brunch plates and loyal regulars, has now been closed for more than two years, and owner Greg Gillin is still trying to find a new home for it. The restaurant shut its doors on June 2, 2024, after what began as renovations under new ownership, and no reopening date has been confirmed since.
A Decade-Plus Favorite Still Searching for Space
Described as “a beloved Manayunk brunch spot for over a decade,” per WhatNow, Greg's Kitchen built its reputation at 4460 Main St., according to PA Eats. The restaurant earned local acclaim over the years, including recognition as Best Breakfast in Manayunk in 2016, Best Brunch in 2017 and Best Brunch Dish in 2018, the same WhatNow report notes.
Gillin is now hoping to relocate to a space of roughly 1,500 to 2,000 square feet somewhere in Manayunk or East Falls, according to the report. One option on the table came from Manayunk Historical Properties LLC, which purchased the restaurant's former building with plans to add apartments upstairs while offering Greg's Kitchen a ground-floor space double the size of its old 650-square-foot footprint, the outlet reports.
Bigger Kitchen, Bigger Crew, Still No Timeline
A move into a larger space would let Gillin grow his team from seven employees to 15 and seat up to 40 diners at once, the same report states. That would mark a major jump for a restaurant that, as Philadelphia Business Journal describes, has long been considered a Manayunk breakfast favorite.
But the timeline has slipped before. An anticipated reopening in early December 2024 came and went without construction even beginning, the same WhatNow report notes. Gillin has attributed the delay to construction issues outside his control, telling the outlet, “there are a couple things out of our control holding that up.”
Not the First Long Closure for Greg's Kitchen
This isn't the first extended shutdown Greg's Kitchen has weathered. The restaurant previously flooded when the remnants of Hurricane Ida pushed the Schuylkill River over its banks, sending floodwaters into the basement, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia. That closure also dragged on far longer than expected, with Gillin saying at the time, “I never thought it would be nine months. But here we are.”
The restaurant's Instagram account has offered little beyond a short note posted to followers: “Closed temporarily for renovations. See you soon(ish)!” For now, exactly when Greg's Kitchen will reopen, and where, remains an open question for the Manayunk neighborhood that has missed its breakfast tables for more than two years.
