A teenage boy was hospitalized after a group of about 10 juveniles allegedly assaulted him and tried to steal his clothing on North Quincy Street in Arlington on Monday. Police say the boy suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to an area hospital. A teenage suspect has since been charged with assault by mob and attempted robbery.
According to Patch, the Arlington County Police Department reported that the juvenile male victim was outside when the group approached him. Some of the roughly 10 juveniles reportedly knew the victim. Police spokesperson Ashley Savage told ARLnow that the teens tried to steal the boy's shoes and jacket. Officers later located one suspect and obtained petitions charging him with assault by mob and attempted robbery.
The attack, which occurred around 2 p.m. Monday, was reported to have happened in a park near Washington-Liberty High School during school hours, per the same account. Arlington Public Schools said it is aware of the incident and will review school-related concerns as appropriate. Washington-Liberty Principal Alexander Duncan III said in an email shared with the outlet that the school is working with police to investigate the latest incident, and that it will use available resources and staff to manage both the incident itself and ongoing concerns. The school has requested more officers at the park during school hours, and the principal said the goal is to mitigate students leaving early for unsafe behavior at nearby locations.
A Father's Escalating Warnings
One local father told the outlet that teenagers frequently congregate in Oak Grove Park during school hours and sometimes stay there for multiple hours at a time. He said he emailed police and school leaders back in 2025 about similar afternoon concerns, reporting that groups had used drugs and alcohol, smoked, caused loud disruptive behavior, and damaged park property. In that same prior email, he said the playground area was left covered in shattered glass and debris, creating a safety hazard for children and families — and he told the outlet he had separately found shattered margarita bottles he believed teens had left behind.
The father said the issues continued after he raised those earlier concerns, and that his wife witnessed the latest attack firsthand. He characterized the incident as a significant escalation, telling the outlet his first concern was for his children's safety, since his kids use the park to bike and play.
Part of a Pattern, Police Say — With Caveats
The North Quincy Street case follows other recent reports of juveniles targeting teens for their belongings around Arlington. On October 21, underage suspects allegedly assaulted two teenagers in Arlington Mill and, per a preliminary incident report, stole clothing items and a backpack before fleeing on foot. On October 5, six teenagers wearing ski masks allegedly attacked two victims outside a residential building in Crystal City and stole a piece of clothing from them.
Savage said police periodically see assault-by-mob incidents involving both adults and juveniles, but added that preliminary investigations had not identified a link between the recent reported incidents. Earlier this year, Arlington County police investigated a separate armed robbery in the Barcroft neighborhood, where, according to ARLnow, a group of teens chased down a juvenile victim, demanded his shoes, displayed what appeared to be a firearm, and stole his shoes and backpack before fleeing in a blue sedan. In April, three juvenile suspects allegedly robbed another juvenile at the H-B Woodlawn soccer field, with one suspect displaying what appeared to be a firearm before the group stole the victim's backpack and clothing and fled on foot; no injuries were reported in that case, and police said the investigation remained ongoing.
