The circumstances behind gunfire near a party bus in downtown Omaha remain unclear after two people were hospitalized early Saturday. Officers were called to the area near 11th and Howard streets just after 2:30 a.m. following reports of shots fired, according to KETV.
Omaha Police are investigating the incident, which involved gunfire near a party bus in the city's downtown core, according to KETV. Police dispatch reported that two people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries and another with critical injuries. Investigators said one victim suffered a facial laceration, though medics could not confirm whether the injury resulted from a gunshot or a pistol-whipping.
Police said the suspect fled northeast from the scene near 11th and Howard streets before being arrested, according to KETV. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or any charges. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
A Familiar Flashpoint in the Old Market
The corner of 11th and Howard sits at the edge of Omaha's Old Market, an entertainment district that has seen gunfire before. In 2021, officers reported hearing shots near that same intersection at about 2:07 a.m. while a male victim later showed up at Immanuel Hospital with a gunshot wound, as noted by WOWT.
Defining the Old Market Historic District
Omaha Heritage Preservation's National Register listing describes the Old Market Historic District as extending from Harney to Howard between 10th and 13th streets, and from Howard to Jackson between 10th and 12th streets.
Another Old Market disturbance, reported separately, involved a sergeant saying someone had fired a gun into the ground with no one hurt. Police responded to that call just after 1 a.m. and took one person into custody for questioning, though the report did not confirm any arrests followed.
City Pushed Cameras and Patrols After Prior Shootings
Those repeated incidents prompted a public safety response in recent years. Following two shootings near 12th and Howard streets, officials said cameras had been installed in the area, and police said they were increasing officer presence while deploying additional technology, per the same reporting. Authorities also requested help from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to patrol downtown over a subsequent weekend.
Earlier security upgrades to the Old Market followed a different weekend shooting near 12th and Howard, when neighborhood officials moved to brighten alleyways and install security cameras using city money from the American Rescue Plan Act. That $260,000 project also covered resurfacing walkways, upgrading electrical infrastructure, and consolidating dumpsters in the district.
It remains unclear whether Saturday's shooting near the party bus is connected to any of those earlier incidents or to the security measures put in place afterward. For now, police continue to investigate the circumstances that left two people hospitalized just blocks from the heart of Omaha's nightlife district.
