A Virginia Beach police officer patrolling near the 300 block of 20th Street heard what was believed to be multiple gunshots Saturday, triggering an investigation into a shooting near The Dome entertainment district. ShotSpotter technology independently generated an alert for the same area around the same time, and officers who canvassed the block afterward located a confirmed crime scene consistent with discharged-firearm evidence. No injuries were reported, and no one required medical assistance, according to police.
The officer was already in the area when the gunfire was reported Saturday, according to 13News Now. That combination of a direct report from an officer on scene and a ShotSpotter alert for the same location gave investigators enough to move quickly, and a subsequent search of the block turned up physical evidence that a firearm had been discharged there.
What Investigators Have Confirmed So Far
Despite the evidence of gunfire, police say the incident did not result in any reported injuries. The case remains under active investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Department, per the same report, and no further details about a suspect or the circumstances surrounding the shots have been released.
The Dome area sits near 20th Street and Pacific Avenue, a stretch of the Oceanfront that has drawn scrutiny before. In 2021, a separate series of three shootings left two people dead and eight others wounded, according to ABC News. One of those incidents included a fatal officer-involved shooting in the same 300 block of 20th Street near Pacific Avenue, where a man later identified as Donovon W. Lynch, 25, of Virginia Beach, died at the scene; the officer involved was not shot, and a firearm was recovered nearby, per that report. That earlier series is a separate matter from Saturday's reported gunfire and involved a different set of circumstances entirely.
City Points to Broader Crime-Data Trends
The city has also touted a broader decline in gun violence citywide, with a page from the City of Virginia Beach titled Virginia Beach Shootings Cut in Half Over Three Years, Hitting Four-Year Low, though the underlying figures behind that claim were not detailed. Residents can review annual and weekly policing reports through the Virginia Beach Police Department's own data pages, which the department makes available for public review. The city has also previously highlighted ShotSpotter's role in local policing, including a July arrest tied to a ShotSpotter alert on Harrier Street.
For now, the Dome-area case remains open, with no additional information released about what prompted the gunfire or who may have been involved.
