A family sleeping inside their home on Papas Place, just south of Georgetown, woke to gunfire tearing through their bedrooms early last Friday morning. Multiple rounds struck the house, some coming dangerously close to the people inside, though remarkably no one was hurt. Now investigators are asking the public to help identify a person of interest tied to the shooting, and they have a lead: a white SUV caught on home security cameras.
Bullets Found Their Way Into Sleeping Areas
The shooting happened in the early morning hours of October 2, according to the WCIV report on the incident. Several of the projectiles penetrated the home, including areas where occupants were sleeping, and investigators say the rounds came alarmingly close to the family inside. As WMBF News reported, multiple shots were fired into the home while the family was asleep.
No injuries were reported, but the home did not escape unscathed. Per the same account, the property sustained more than $5,000 in damage. The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance identifying a person of interest in connection with the case, according to Count on 2.
White SUV Is the Key Clue
Security cameras near the scene captured footage of a white SUV, which investigators have released publicly in hopes someone recognizes the vehicle or its driver. The sheriff's office has not identified a suspect, a motive, or a weapon used in the shooting, and no further details about the vehicle have been made public.
Deputies are asking anyone who recognizes the SUV in the footage, or who has any information about the shooting, to call the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office at 843-546-5102. With no injuries reported, investigators appear focused squarely on tracking down whoever was behind the wheel that night.
Not an Isolated Pattern, But Not the First of Its Kind
Shootings into occupied homes have cropped up elsewhere in the Carolinas this year, though each case stands on its own. Deputies in Greenville County said an investigation into shots fired into an apartment there was in its early stages, according to FOX Carolina. Across the state line, police in Huntersville, North Carolina searched for a suspect vehicle after shots were fired into an occupied home there too, with QC News reporting that no one was injured but the vehicle fled the scene immediately afterward.
For now, the Georgetown County case remains open, with investigators seeking information about a white SUV seen in released footage. Investigators have not said whether the footage has led to any new information since it was released.
