Sacramento police officers responded to a shooting report near X and 5th Streets shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday. CHP blocked the 5th Street off-ramp and part of X Street as officers investigated. No injuries were reported.
The Sacramento Police Department said officers responded to the report of a shooting shortly after 9 p.m. and investigated a possible shooting near X and 5th Streets, according to KCRA. The intersection sits just off Highway 50, and the California Highway Patrol said one of its officers heard gunshots in the area, per the same report. CHP blocked the 5th Street off-ramp and part of X Street to traffic as officers worked the scene, according to KCRA reporter Anahita Jafary. Police said no one was injured in the incident.
A Freeway Edge With a History
The stretch of X and 5th Streets sits along the southern border of Sacramento's historic Southside Park neighborhood, tucked directly beneath the elevated Highway 50 corridor, according to Wikipedia. Southside Park itself is bounded by R Street to the north and the freeway overpass to the south, placing the reported gunfire right at the neighborhood's edge.
Wednesday's response involved both CHP and Sacramento police. A CHP officer heard gunshots, and CHP blocked the 5th Street off-ramp and part of X Street as officers investigated. The corridor is also part of Caltrans' $529 million Fix50 project, a pavement rehabilitation effort spanning 14 lane-miles between Interstate 5 and Watt Avenue. Caltrans described ongoing work, a scheduled nighttime ramp closure and CHP traffic enforcement at the work zone.
Open Questions Remain
Investigators have not said whether shell casings or other physical evidence were recovered at the scene, nor whether the city's ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot detection system picked up the sound. It also remains unclear whether the gunfire originated on the freeway's mainlines, the off-ramp itself, or the surrounding city streets. Sacramento's reliance on ShotSpotter has grown in recent years — the City Council voted 8-1 in September 2025 to extend its $2.65 million contract with SoundThinking through 2030 across North, South, and East Sacramento, according to ABC10. City officials reported that residents called 911 for only 11% of incidents from 2020 to 2024, meaning about 89% were not reported by residents during that period.
If investigators determine someone fired a weapon recklessly without hitting a target, California law allows prosecutors to pursue grossly negligent discharge of a firearm under Penal Code Section 246.3, a wobbler offense carrying up to a year in county jail as a misdemeanor or up to three years in state prison as a felony, according to Pasadena Criminal Attorney. If evidence instead showed shots were aimed at an occupied vehicle on the freeway or ramp, the applicable charge would shift to Penal Code Section 246, which makes maliciously firing at an occupied vehicle or inhabited structure a felony punishable by three, five, or seven years in state prison, per Eisner Gorin LLP.
Part of a Broader Downward Trend
Statewide, California Department of Justice statistics released in July 2026 documented year-over-year declines across all major crime categories in 2025, including homicide, violent crime, robbery, and vehicle theft, according to the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom, which attributed the drops to targeted multi-agency task forces and violent crime intervention programs.
Wednesday night's report near X and 5th Streets involved no reported injuries, but questions remain about what set off the gunfire beneath the Highway 50 corridor.
