Gunshots rang out near Ohio State University's Lincoln Tower around 10 a.m. Tuesday after two drivers got into a heated argument that ended with one vehicle ramming the other. Both vehicles fled the scene, and no bystanders were reported hurt, though the Ohio State University Police Division says the case remains an active investigation.
Delivery Stop Turns Into Street Confrontation
According to The Lantern, two vehicles pulled into the loading dock service drive on Cannon Drive, appearing to make deliveries, when the drivers began arguing. The confrontation escalated when one vehicle drove around the other and struck it as they passed, the student newspaper reported. Witnesses in the area said they heard loud arguing followed by what sounded like gunshots, after which both vehicles fled the scene.
OSU police are investigating the incident as an aggravated assault, per the same account. The university has not released descriptions of the drivers, the vehicles involved, or any details about what prompted the dispute in the first place, and those specifics remain unknown.
Police Urge Caution, Ask Public for Tips
In a public safety notice described by ABC6 OnYourSide, OSUPD said it is actively investigating and asked anyone with information to call 614-292-2121. The notice also encouraged people on campus to lock their doors and windows, walk with friends or coworkers when possible, and stay aware of their surroundings, especially at night.
The confrontation unfolded near the Lincoln Tower loading dock off Cannon Drive on Ohio State's Columbus campus, and both vehicles drove away from the area afterward.
How This Fits Into Campus Crime Numbers
The incident comes weeks after Ohio State released its annual campus safety report, which, per WOSU Public Media, showed aggravated assaults at 14 reported incidents, remaining roughly the same as the previous year. That figure offers some context for how this latest case fits into the university's broader public safety picture, though it does not shed light on what sparked Tuesday's confrontation.
Officials have not confirmed whether arrests were made, and the identities of the two drivers have not been released. Anyone with information about the confrontation is asked to call Ohio State police at 614-292-2121.
