H-E-B has purchased more than 20 acres in southwest Fort Worth for a new grocery store, marking the company's third location in the city as it continues pushing deeper into the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. The site sits at the northeast corner of Chisholm Trail Parkway and Oakmont Boulevard, placing the future store inside a master-planned community in a rapidly growing part of the Chisholm Trail corridor.

According to Fort Worth Report, the land falls within the 250-acre Overland community, part of the larger Edwards Ranch development already underway in that corner of the city. The San Antonio-based grocer has been on a buying spree in the area, and this purchase adds to more than a dozen parcels H-E-B already owns across Tarrant County, the outlet notes.

Construction on the new store is expected to begin in early 2027, with an opening targeted for late 2028, per preliminary company timelines reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The outlet reports that the southwest location will be the third H-E-B store in Fort Worth, joining the grocer's growing footprint in a metro area it entered relatively recently but has since expanded into aggressively.

A Historic Family Land Deal

The Overland community sits on land tied to the Edwards family, whose development arm, Cassco, has shaped much of southwest Fort Worth for generations. Over the past 70 years, Cassco has turned family-owned acreage into neighborhoods and mixed-use projects including Clearfork, Riverhills, Overton Park and Tanglewood, the Star-Telegram reports, underscoring how the new H-E-B will slot into a long legacy of development on that side of the city.

H-E-B President of Shareholder Relations Stephen Butt framed the move as bringing the chain meaningfully closer to Fort Worth's urban core. “With our new store on Chisholm Parkway, we can now say that day is soon,” Butt said, according to the same Star-Telegram report, referring to the goal of locating a store nearer downtown. The grocer has also said the new location will reflect the surrounding community's character inside and out, per MySA.

Part of a Broader DFW Push

The Overland purchase is the latest in a string of H-E-B moves across North Texas. The company has already opened locations in Mansfield and the Mid-Cities area, according to Fort Worth Report, and has Tarrant County stores in Alliance and Mansfield. The chain's 125,000-square-foot Alliance store in north Tarrant County opened in 2024, while a Walsh Ranch location was expected to wrap up construction in December 2026, the Star-Telegram notes.

H-E-B's growth isn't limited to Fort Worth. As reported by Grocery Dive, the retailer's Prosper store was the ninth location it has opened under its namesake banner in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since first entering the region, and the chain also operates six of its 10 Central Market stores in the metro. That 133,000-square-foot Prosper store includes a two-story True Texas BBQ restaurant, curbside pickup parking, a drive-up pharmacy and a fuel station with a carwash, Grocery Dive reported, giving a sense of the scale H-E-B has built elsewhere in the region, though no comparable details have been released for the Overland site.

H-E-B has also announced additional DFW-area stores in Mansfield, Melissa, Prosper and Rockwall, according to the company's own newsroom, and previously revealed plans for a site on 18.2 acres at the FM 3325 and Interstate 20 service road in the Walsh development, Fort Worth Report reported in July. The Fort Worth Business Journal notes that the grocer increasingly turns to the west side of the Metroplex for expansion, a pattern the Overland purchase fits squarely into.

A Grocer With Deep Texas Roots

Founded in Kerrville and headquartered in San Antonio, H-E-B now operates more than 450 stores across Texas and Mexico and generates sales exceeding $50 billion, according to Fort Worth Report. As MySA notes, H-E-B continues to grow across North Texas, and a second Fort Worth location is a possibility. For now, Overland residents and southwest Fort Worth shoppers have a two-year wait ahead before the grocer's newest store opens its doors.
