A dispute at a Halfmoon storage facility turned violent Wednesday morning when a man allegedly used his own motorcycle helmet to shatter another person's windshield, then tossed the victim's debit card on top of a storage unit before police arrived and took him into custody.
Morris Fifield, 34, of Halfmoon, was involved in the confrontation around 11:30 a.m. at an Extra Space Storage facility on Route 9, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, as reported by Daily Voice. Investigators said Fifield used the helmet to break the windshield before throwing the victim's debit card onto a nearby storage unit.
Officers Respond and Make an Arrest
Officers arrived at the scene and arrested Fifield, according to the same report. He was charged with felony third-degree criminal mischief and misdemeanor third-degree criminal tampering.
Under New York's criminal mischief statute, a person is guilty of third-degree criminal mischief when, with intent to damage another person's property and without any right or reasonable belief in having such a right, they damage another's motor vehicle by breaking into it, according to New York state law. The excerpt of the statute available does not detail every element of the charge, and the full language should be reviewed for complete context.
Arraignment and Release
Fifield was arraigned at Halfmoon Town Court and released on his own recognizance, per the same report. The identity of the victim, the extent of any property damage, what prompted the dispute, and whether the debit card was recovered have not been made public.
It also remains unclear whether additional charges are being considered or what the case's eventual outcome will be. Hoodline will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
