A Halifax County sheriff's sergeant kicked down a locked front door and crawled through a smoke-filled trailer outside Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Thursday night to pull a trapped resident out of the flames. Sergeant Alex Wood was dispatched to the fire around 9:25 p.m. in the 100 block of Haywood Drive after a 911 caller said a family member was living alone inside the home and had not yet escaped.
When Wood arrived, the interior was already engulfed in flames, according to witn.com. Deputies say he kicked in the locked front door and crawled on the ground, calling out to the resident as he pushed deeper into the burning structure.
The man called back, and the sergeant found him lying on the ground before pulling him out of the home, the station's report says. Firefighters and other emergency crews arrived to continue battling the blaze as the rescue unfolded.
Sergeant Treated and Released, Resident Stable
Officials say EMS treated Wood at the scene and released him following the rescue. The man he pulled from the home was reported in stable condition afterward, per the same account.
The Shore News Network separately reported on the rescue, framing it as a dramatic save by a North Carolina deputy who crawled through smoke to reach the man.
Details beyond the immediate rescue remain limited. The identity of the man pulled from the home, the extent of damage to the residence, and the cause of the fire have not been disclosed.
