A String of Recent Hampton Shootings
Saturday's shooting is the latest in a series of gun violence incidents to hit Hampton in recent weeks. Just ten days earlier, on Oct. 14, a man suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound after a dispute at a recording studio near the first block of East Queens Way, as reported by The Virginian-Pilot. Police said that confrontation escalated into a physical struggle over a firearm, which discharged and struck the victim, and the Hampton Police Major Crimes Unit believed the dispute involved two people who knew each other.
In a separate case, a 27-year-old man was injured in a drive-by shooting in the 1400 block of West Queen Street, according to WAVY-TV. Police said that victim was shot by someone in a passing vehicle while walking in the area, and he was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. None of these incidents have been publicly linked to one another.
Violent Crime Numbers in Hampton
The uptick comes against a backdrop of rising violent crime citywide. Hampton recorded 175 violent crimes through June 30, 2025, including 12 homicides, 27 sexual assaults, 50 robberies and 86 aggravated assaults, according to The Virginian-Pilot. That total was 28 higher than the same period in 2024, though one lower than in 2023.
Hampton Police Chief Jimmie Wideman attributed that year's spike to a handful of isolated incidents in April and May and said he expected rates to level off closer to 2024 figures, per the same Pilot report. The outlet also noted that a partnership between the Hampton Police Division and Virginia State Police had produced 113 felony arrests and 39 recovered firearms as of that July report.
