Harris County Precinct 4 constables recovered more than 160,000 pounds of stolen industrial equipment from a local scrap yard, worth over $800,000, as part of an investigation into a theft reported by a local company. Investigators say the company's total loss from the theft could climb to nearly $2 million once the full scope is determined.

The recovery was announced Thursday by the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office, led by Constable Mark Herman, according to a Facebook post from the office. Corporal Ramirez led the investigation after the local company reported the theft of its industrial equipment, and tracked some of the stolen items to a scrap yard in Harris County, as detailed by cdllife.com.

Once deputies located the equipment, they found more than just the initial haul. Additional equipment belonging to the same company turned up during the recovery operation, according to the same report, bringing the total weight of everything pulled from the scrap yard past 160,000 pounds.

Loss Could Approach $2 Million

Constable Herman said the company's reported losses from the theft could ultimately approach $2 million, a figure that goes well beyond the roughly $800,000 worth of gear recovered so far, per the report. The recovered gear is valued at roughly $800,000, compared with possible losses approaching $2 million. The office described the investigation as active and ongoing, and police did not release details on any arrests made or charges filed, the outlet notes.

Under the law, anyone eventually connected to the theft would be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Copper Wire Theft in Houston

The Harris County case comes amid an increase in copper wire theft in Houston. An HPD sergeant told ABC13 that copper wire theft has climbed in the city this year, with more cases reported in 2026 than at the same point in 2025. Sgt. Bob Carson told the station that copper is currently fetching more than $5 per pound at local scrap yards, up from the $4.20 to $4.50 range scrap yards were paying at this time last year.

Carson said stolen copper typically moves fast, heading straight to a scrap yard for a quick payout, and that his division keeps two detectives stationed at scrap-metal yards full-time looking for signs of stolen material, the station reports. Some companies have started switching to aluminum wire partly to make their equipment a less attractive target for thieves, according to the same report.

Similar Recoveries Elsewhere in Texas

Harris County isn't the only place where large-scale equipment theft rings have surfaced recently. In Austin County, investigators executed arrest and search warrants on Oct. 13 in the 2000 block of Skrivanek Road in San Felipe, according to Austin County News Online. That operation led to the recovery of more than 40 stolen vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment, with the sheriff's office estimating the total value at several million dollars. Jesus Suarez Fernandez, 60, was arrested on a felony theft warrant, and investigators recovered two stolen vehicles, a stolen skid steer and a stolen large generator from the property, the outlet reports.

Farther east, a multi-agency task force uncovered more than $370,000 worth of stolen equipment and trailers tied to thefts across five states. KETK News reported that the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force, working with the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office and other agencies, recovered 14 confirmed stolen items in Kaufman County that had been reported stolen in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Missouri. Together, the cases describe separate recoveries of stolen property in Texas; the Harris County investigation into the company's reported stolen equipment, which could approach $2 million in value, continues.
