A 16-year-old boy was grazed in the shoulder by a stray bullet that tore through the window of his upstairs apartment at Cleme Manor Apartments in Houston, after people inside two vehicles opened fire on each other in the parking lot below. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and was expected to recover, according to police.
The gunfire broke out between occupants of two separate vehicles in the apartment complex’s parking lot, according to onscene.tv. A stray round from that exchange went through the window of an upstairs unit and grazed the teenager’s shoulder while he was inside, as detailed by houstonstringer.com. Police said the boy suffered only a minor injury and was being transported to an area hospital as a precaution.
Houston Police Lieutenant Wilkens said people in two separate vehicles exchanged gunfire in the parking lot and that a stray bullet entered an upstairs apartment, per the department’s account relayed in the onscene.tv report. Police said no one in either vehicle was hit, and the suspected shooters fled the area before officers arrived, the same report notes.
Man With Handgun Detained, But Role Unclear
Investigators detained a man who had a handgun inside his vehicle, though it remained unknown whether he was involved in the shooting, per the onscene.tv account. Police had not determined his connection to the gunfire, and authorities did not have additional suspect descriptions available at the time of the report. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Some seed reporting placed the police response at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night in the 5300 block of Coke Street, though that detail was not independently confirmed beyond the original account. The address places the shooting in a stretch of Houston’s Fifth Ward area that has seen repeated gun violence at nearby apartment complexes in recent months.
Pattern of Violence Near Coke Street
The area has a troubling recent history. Four people, including a child, were injured in a shootout over a move-out at an apartment complex on Coke Street in late June, according to ABC13. The station reported that HPD initially gave the child’s age as 11 and later corrected it to 12. HPD said that shooting happened at about 7 p.m. near the East Freeway and Market in Fifth Ward.
Months earlier, in October 2025, an 18-year-old man was killed in a possible shootout at an apartment complex off Coke Street in the same Fifth Ward area, ABC13 reported at the time. Officers in that case responded to the 5300 block of Coke Street near the East Freeway at about 10:35 p.m. and found the young man already shot. No arrests tied to that earlier killing were included in the available reporting.
No further details on charges or arrests connected to the shooting that injured the 16-year-old have been released. Houston police have not said whether the detained man will face charges or whether additional suspects have been identified as the investigation continues.
