St. Johns County is throwing open the doors to a brand-new community center and library in Hastings next month, capping a project that broke ground nearly two years ago. The grand opening is set for Friday, November 13, at 9 a.m., and the public is invited to celebrate at the facility's location at 401 N. Main St.

The St. Johns County Public Library System and Health and Human Services jointly announced the celebration, according to a sjcpls.org post stating they are excited to announce the official grand opening of the new Hastings Community Center and Library on Friday, November 13, 2026, at 9 a.m. The same announcement was shared by St. Johns County on Facebook, confirming the public is invited to attend.

The combined facility is designed to bring residents together and expand access to local resources, pairing a full-service library with community gathering space in one building. It includes a children's area, a seed library, and meeting spaces, along with a Health and Human Services satellite office for county residents in the Hastings area.

A Vision Years in the Making

Plans for the site go back further than the recent construction timeline suggests. The county's own project page describes the facility as combining a state-of-the-art library with a versatile community center offering educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities, per the St. Johns County project page. The design calls for an expanded library with modern amenities, ample meeting rooms, a multi-purpose event space, and an outdoor gathering area.

County materials describing the architectural plans go into even more detail, noting the facility will feature a full-sized library, a separate children's collection room, an outdoor children's reading garden, large meeting and assembly rooms, county Health and Human Services offices, and a drive-up book drop. That level of detail reflects a process that put real decision-making power in residents' hands: more than 150 residents voted on four proposed designs revealed at a public meeting on Sept. 12, and after two weeks of voting, the Hastings community picked Concept A for the new facility.

From Groundbreaking to Grand Opening

Construction on the project was expected to begin in 2024, and the county marked a significant milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 22, 2024. At that time, officials anticipated the library would open in fall 2026 — a timeline that's now culminating with next month's ribbon-cutting.

The project carries financial backing beyond local coffers. It is sponsored in part by the Florida Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services and the State of Florida. Years earlier, the project also received a major federal boost: the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development finalized a $5 million loan guarantee for the effort, according to a 2022 report from staugustine.com.

With the ribbon-cutting now just two weeks away, Hastings residents will soon get their first look inside a facility years in the planning — one meant to serve as both a neighborhood library and a hub for county services in the small North Florida town.
