One person who had been grazed by a bullet was found near Green Street and Washington Street in Henderson on Wednesday afternoon, triggering modified lockdowns at four Henderson County schools as a precaution. The lockdowns were later lifted, and police said the shooting itself did not appear to have happened where the victim was found.
Henderson police confirmed one person was shot and “grazed” and found near the intersection, according to tristatehomepage.com. A report of the shooting came in shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, and crews remained on scene as of 1:42 p.m., the outlet reported. Police told the station the shooting did not appear to have occurred at the location where the victim was discovered.
A separate account offered a different picture of how the shooting unfolded. According to the-hendersonian.com, a bullet grazed the arm of a teenager who was riding in a car on Alves Street, with police saying the shot came from another car traveling on Alves between Clay Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. That account also reported the juvenile did not need to seek medical treatment for the wound.
Four Schools Placed on Modified Lockdown
In response to the shooting, Central, South Middle, Jefferson and South Heights schools were all placed on modified lockdown as a precaution, per tristatehomepage.com's report, and those lockdowns were later lifted. Holy Name School also said it was on a modified lockdown, according to the same report from the-hendersonian.com. Authorities said they did not believe there was any threat to the schools themselves.
14 News reported on the lockdowns, saying police were investigating reports of a shooting in Henderson, Kentucky, near Washington and Green streets. Police were not actively looking for a suspect, though individuals had been detained, according to tristatehomepage.com. The-hendersonian.com reported that no one had been apprehended at the time police were interviewed.
Second Henderson County Lockdown This Year
Wednesday's lockdowns mark the second time this year that Henderson County schools have used modified lockdown procedures as a precaution over a report involving a firearm. Back in April, two Henderson County schools used modified lockdown procedures after a caller reported seeing someone with a handgun outside a school, while instruction continued as normal, according to fox56news.com. In that case, Henderson County High School and North Middle School used the modified lockdown procedure, with officials saying there was no threat inside the schools.
That April incident was ultimately resolved without any charges tied to the schools themselves. Police located a man matching the caller's description waiting for a ride at a nearby Subway, and security footage showed he never set foot on school property. Officers said the man did have a firearm on him, which was legal since he never walked onto school grounds, fox56news.com reported.
As of Wednesday afternoon, key details of the Henderson shooting — including exactly where the gunfire occurred and whether anyone has been arrested or charged — remained unresolved.
