An 84-year-old Henderson woman is dead after a driver struck her on East Cheyenne Avenue early Monday and sped off without stopping, according to Las Vegas police. The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. near North Walnut Road, and the woman was rushed to a hospital trauma unit, where she later died.

Police say the woman was crossing East Cheyenne Avenue west of North Walnut Road, outside a marked crosswalk, when a burgundy Chevrolet Tahoe traveling on Cheyenne struck her, according to the Las Vegas Sun. The Tahoe reportedly projected her onto the curb before the driver fled the scene. She was taken to University Medical Center's Trauma Unit, where she was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred at 5:55 a.m. near East Cheyenne Avenue and North Walnut Road, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The newspaper reports the woman was crossing outside of a marked or implied crosswalk when a burgundy 2021-2026 Chevrolet Tahoe, traveling westbound, struck her with its right front. The driver failed to remain at the scene and fled west on Cheyenne, police said.

Nevada's Hit-and-Run Laws

Under Nevada law, drivers involved in a crash that causes injury or death are required to immediately stop, return to the scene if necessary, provide identifying information and render reasonable assistance to anyone hurt, according to Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 484E. Failing to comply is a category B felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of $2,000 to $5,000, the statute states.

Separate statutes under NRS Chapter 484B address a driver's duties toward pedestrians, including additional penalties when a driver is found to be the proximate cause of a pedestrian collision, and spell out when pedestrians are required to yield to vehicles or cross at a marked crosswalk.

A Grim Milestone, Amid a Downward Trend

The woman's death marked the 98th traffic-related fatality within Metro's jurisdiction so far in 2026, according to the Review-Journal. It comes even as statewide numbers have trended downward this year. Nevada recorded 230 traffic fatalities from Jan. 1 through Aug. 31, 2026, down from 261 during the same stretch in 2025, an 11.88% decrease, according to a Las Vegas Sun report on statewide crash data.

Clark County, the state's most populous county, accounted for the bulk of those fatalities with 127 through August, a 24.85% drop from the 169 recorded over the same period in 2025, the same report found. Statewide pedestrian deaths totaled 63 through Aug. 31, down 3.08% from 65 a year earlier, while the total number of fatal crashes fell to 218 from 245, an 11.02% decline. Nevada recorded 380 traffic fatalities in all of 2025, down from 420 in 2024, per the newspaper's analysis.
