A driver heading east on Main Street near Thonotosassa stopped to help a man waving a flashlight early last Tuesday morning, only to be met with gunfire that struck his vehicle five times. The driver escaped unhurt, sped to a nearby gas station and called authorities, and deputies have since arrested a 32-year-old man accused of opening fire without any clear reason.
According to the wfla.com, deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Main Street and Grovewood Avenue just before 1 a.m. last Tuesday. The driver had stopped after the pedestrian flagged him down by waving a flashlight, the station reports, and the man then fired multiple rounds at the vehicle, striking its side five times before the driver fled the scene and pulled into a gas station to contact authorities.
Detectives Trace Gun Back To Suspect's Home
Detectives identified the shooter as 32-year-old Franklin Windham, per the same account. Investigators secured a search warrant for Windham's home, where they recovered a firearm matching the caliber used in the roadway shooting, and Windham was arrested on Tuesday.
Windham now faces a lengthy list of charges stemming from the shooting: attempted second-degree murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting into a vehicle, discharging a firearm in public or on residential property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and criminal mischief of $1,000 or more. Florida law, under Florida Statute 790.19, specifically addresses shooting at, within, or into occupied vehicles, among other structures.
Sheriff Calls It Kindness Met With Violence
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed the case directly, saying the driver had simply tried to do the right thing. “This man saw someone he thought needed help and stepped in. His kindness was met with violence,” Chronister said, according to the station's report. He added that the suspect has been charged with attempted murder and will face the consequences for his actions.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says the investigation remains active as detectives continue piecing together what led to the shooting. No motive has been disclosed for why the pedestrian allegedly turned on the driver who stopped to help him.
Part Of A Troubling Pattern On Florida Roads
The case echoes other recent incidents involving motorists attacked after stopping to render aid. In Apopka, a man who stopped to help two people after a crash was shot and killed, according to investigators cited by WFTV. Earlier this year, a Good Samaritan was violently attacked after stopping to help a motorist who had crashed on a Central Florida expressway, as reported by ClickOrlando, which identified the victim as Hans Hamilton.
Statewide gun violence data adds context to the broader landscape these cases unfold in. Florida's overall gun death rate rose 6% between 2015 and 2024, even as its gun homicide rate fell 11% over the same period, according to the Center for Gun Violence Solutions at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The center also found that gun violence cost Floridians $31.7 billion in 2024, or $1,356 per person.
For now, the Hillsborough case remains an active investigation, after a driver stopped to help near Main Street and Grovewood Avenue.
