A man crept up behind a woman on the 2900 block of Holme Avenue late Monday, threw her to the ground, punched her repeatedly, and ripped away her car keys and cell phone before trying to make off with her vehicle. Bystanders intervened and chased him off before he could drive away, and he fled on foot.
Police Release Surveillance Video of the Attack
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the robbery happened at approximately 10 p.m. on October 12 on the 2900 block of Holme Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia, and was logged under DC # 26-08-050867 in the 8th Police District. Police shared surveillance footage and images of the suspect on social media early Thursday, as reported by NBC10 Philadelphia. The footage shows the man approaching the woman from behind before throwing her down and punching her multiple times.
After taking her keys and phone, the man tried to take her vehicle as well, but bystanders chased him off and he ran away on foot, per the station's report. Detectives are now asking anyone who recognizes the man in the images to come forward.
A Block With Recent Police Activity
Police activity has also occurred on the 2900 block of Holme Avenue this year — on September 9, officers recovered two stolen vehicles, a Honda and an Acura, abandoned on the block after the driver of a Mazda hit a police cruiser as suspects fled following officers' response to a theft in progress on Rowland Avenue in Holmesburg, according to Metro Philadelphia.
The neighborhood sits near Pennypack Park within Philadelphia's 6th City Council District, as WHYY has reported. This latest robbery also arrives amid a broader pattern Hoodline has tracked in Northeast Philadelphia, including a string of bank-area robberies targeting women reported in late September, where male suspects physically confronted victims to steal cash and personal items.
What the Numbers Show in the 8th District
Crime statistics from the Philadelphia Police Department show non-firearm robberies in the 8th District have held essentially flat this year, with 40 reported offenses year-to-date through October 13, matching the 40 recorded over the same period in 2025. That comes even as overall violent crime in the district fell 7.6% over the same stretch.
Citywide, the trend is more encouraging: non-gun robberies dropped 3.06% year-to-date through October 14, with 1,772 reported offenses compared to 1,828 a year earlier, while armed robberies fell 20.80%. Total violent crime across Philadelphia declined by nearly 4% in 2026, according to the department's crime data.
Potential Charges Under Pennsylvania Law
Under Pennsylvania statute 18 Pa.C.S. § 3701, theft accompanied by bodily injury or physical force can constitute robbery.
