A woman in her 80s died Friday afternoon after her vehicle plunged from a high-rise parking garage in downtown Honolulu, crashing upside down onto the street below near Bishop and Hotel streets. Emergency crews found the crushed SUV outside the CU Hawaii convenience store, where EMS pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
Timing and Victim's Age
According to Hawaii News Now, the woman was in her 80s and emergency crews responded to the scene on Hotel Street just before 3 p.m. Friday. KHON2 reported that the woman was 84 and crews were called around 2:30 p.m. Initial EMS information gave her age as 80. A separate report from KITV said the victim was a woman in her 80s, but her exact age and identity were not given.
Per Hawaii News Now's reporting, the SUV was found crushed upside down outside the CU Hawaii convenience store, and there was visible damage to the fourth-floor railing of the parking structure directly above where the vehicle came to rest. KITV's account adds that the car apparently drove the wrong way inside the parking structure before launching from the building at Bishop Street and South Hotel Street, details attributed to Honolulu Emergency Services Department Director James Ireland.
Street Closed as Police Investigate
Hotel Street was closed between Bishop and Bethel streets while police investigated the crash, the station's report notes. KITV also reported that no other injuries or deaths were reported from the scene, meaning the crash appears to have been confined to the single vehicle and its driver.
No arrests, citations, or completed findings have been reported in connection with Friday's crash, and the exact cause remains under investigation by police.
