CenterPoint Energy sent 355 line workers, contractors, and vegetation management personnel from the Houston area to Pensacola, Florida, to help restore power after Hurricane Isaias tore through the Florida Panhandle. The crews headed to Florida on Saturday, joining a mutual assistance effort in support of Florida Power & Light as communities across the region began digging out from the storm.

A Mutual Aid Deployment Built for Scale

The Houston-based utility's contribution included 105 company line workers, roughly 150 contractor line workers, and 100 vegetation management personnel, according to a PR Newswire release detailing the breakdown of crew roles. Those teams joined utility workers from other areas also responding to Hurricane Isaias, part of a broader mutual assistance system that lets electric utilities send crews to other regions during major weather events, as Click2Houston reported. The combined workforce is expected to assist with restoration work over the coming days.

CenterPoint monitored Hurricane Isaias and prepared for the storm while sending crews out of state to assist Florida with restoration work.

Why Pensacola Needed the Help

Forecasters warned Hurricane Isaias could bring 4 to 8 inches of rain and damaging winds to the Florida Panhandle; the storm weakened into a post-tropical cyclone on Saturday, per First Coast News. Hundreds of thousands of people were without power in Florida after the storm. Escambia County — home to Pensacola — had roughly 133,000 outages, or 75% of the county, according to Florida Politics.

To meet that need, Florida Power & Light had pre-positioned a total restoration workforce of 14,000 personnel gathered from 17 states across 16 staging areas ahead of landfall, the outlet's report notes. CenterPoint's 355 workers represent one slice of that much larger, multi-state coordination effort. Gulf Power served Northwest Florida, and a merger into FPL was planned to begin in 2022, according to Global Energy Monitor.

How Crews Reach Damaged Lines

Road clearing was underway after the storm. Crews began working around 3 a.m. Saturday, with the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol involved, according to a live update from The Guardian.

Utilities use mutual assistance to send crews to other regions during major weather events. CenterPoint joined the mutual-assistance response to Hurricane Isaias.
