Houston officials gathered Monday to celebrate the opening of Boulevard 61, a 100-unit mixed-income apartment community at 6101 Richmond Avenue that sets aside 90 homes as income-restricted and 10 as market-rate. Mayor John Whitmire joined city officials, housing advocates, DMA Companies representatives and other partner organizations at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, where attendees took part in the official ribbon cutting and property tours.
The grand-opening celebration, held October 26, marked the formal unveiling of a project that had quietly begun welcoming residents beforehand, according to stylemagazine.com. The development combines affordable homes with market-rate housing in a part of southwest Houston close to the Galleria, offering one-, two- and three-bedroom residences.
A Collaboration of City Agencies and Private Developers
Boulevard 61 came together through a partnership involving the City's Housing and Community Development Department, DMA Companies and the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation, per the same stylemagazine.com account. The Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation and Housing Alliance HTX both participated in the event, and 25 of the apartments are connected to project-based housing vouchers administered by Housing Alliance HTX. Diana McIver is the president and owner of DMA Companies.

The property's own listings describe one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, including a floor plan called The Richmond, according to dmablvd61.com.
Part of a Broader Push for Affordable Housing
Houston is working to expand access to affordable housing and create more housing opportunities for residents, the Click2Houston report notes.
Houston City Council voted to sell a 12-acre property in southwest Houston to a developer for more than $13 million to build dozens of affordable single-family homes, according to ABC13 Houston. A 12-acre Stella Link project includes plans for 89 affordable homes.
