Houston Methodist broke ground Wednesday on a new 24-hour emergency care center at Texas Heritage Marketplace in Katy, a $15 million, 11,150-square-foot facility designed to bring critical care closer to one of the fastest-growing corridors in the Houston region. The site will be built at 29133 Katy Freeway in Waller County and is slated to include 10 exam rooms, X-ray services, CT imaging, lab services, and on-site clinicians trained in several specialties.

The October 7 ceremony drew Houston Methodist representatives and employees alongside community members, stakeholders and elected officials, according to Community Impact, which first reported on the groundbreaking following an October 5 news release. Houston Methodist president and CEO Marc L. Boom said the new center will make care “more accessible, more seamless and better coordinated” for the region. The project is being built by O'Donnell/Snider Construction, with officials targeting a completion goal of summer 2027.

The emergency center is designed to serve Katy and the surrounding areas, and according to Carl Little, it will be the westernmost emergency room before Columbus, Texas. Little said the facility will expand access to high-quality care in fast-growing communities and will allow patients in Katy and nearby areas to receive “critical lifesaving care closer to home without unnecessary delays.” The site itself sits inside Texas Heritage Marketplace, a 165-acre, $400 million mixed-use development at the southeast corner of Interstate 10 and Texas Heritage Parkway, according to NewQuest Properties, which developed the site with more than 750,000 square feet of retail and dining surrounding a five-acre green space.

Part of a Quarter-Billion-Dollar Regional Push

The new emergency center is not a standalone project. It forms part of a broader $247 million expansion initiative that Houston Methodist West Hospital announced in August 2024, which set aside $185 million for main hospital facilities and $62 million for community care outpatient expansions, per the Katy Times. That same regional strategy produced the 65,000-square-foot Cinco Ranch Comprehensive Care Center, which Houston Methodist completed in April 2026 adjacent to its existing Cinco Ranch emergency care facility.

The build-out reflects explosive population growth on Katy's western edge. The neighboring city of Fulshear ranked as the second-fastest-growing U.S. city, with the census showing nearly 65,000 people in the area, according to the Houston Chronicle. That growth comes with deep pockets attached: 2024 American Community Survey data compiled by Data USA shows Fulshear's median household income at $187,035 and median property value at $572,700, with a 90% homeownership rate.

Retail and Healthcare Converge at Texas Heritage Marketplace

Houston Methodist's new ER is rising inside a commercial center that is rapidly filling in around it. Retail development at Texas Heritage Marketplace reached a milestone this week when Target held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new 148,000-square-foot store, per Community Impact.

Healthcare Development Across West Houston

Hoodline previously reported on related momentum at Texas Heritage Marketplace, including Cheddar's permit filing at the site and broader medical office demand along Katy Freeway, part of a pattern Hoodline also tracked in a recent Acres Homes clinic opening tied to Houston Methodist's wider expansion strategy.

For now, the Katy emergency center remains a construction site, with Houston Methodist officials targeting a summer 2027 opening. If that timeline holds, residents across Katy and Fulshear will gain a 24-hour emergency option built specifically for a corridor that, by multiple measures, is growing faster than nearly anywhere else in the country.
